Baseball Sweeps Bethany, Extends Win Streak

Fort Pierce, Fla. - Marywood University's baseball team defeated Bethany College (W.V.) in two tight games, 8-6 and 4-2, to extend their win streak to four games and win their second straight doubleheader Thursday afternoon in Florida. Marywood moved to 5-2 on the year while the Bison fell to 2-6.

In the opener, Scott Becker and Andrew Lewis both went 3-for-4 at the plate and each had a double and a pair of RBIs in the win.  Marywood trailed 1-0 after a half inning but plated two in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead, and after giving up three in the second bounced back with four of their own to take a 6-4 lead.  Each team would score two the rest of the way, with Marywood splitting their runs in the fourth and sixth and the Bison coming up with a pair of runs in the fifth.  Mitch Clemons also had a pair of RBI on a single in the first.

Marywood out-hit Bethany 13-6 in the opener.  John Mandarano (1-0) went 4.1 innings to get the win after allowing three earned runs on six hits.  Nicholas Boyer pitched two-thirds of an inning and Trevor Powers came on to earn the save, striking out three over two innings without allowing a hit.

In the nightcap, Marywood built a 4-0 lead before holding off the Bison for the win.  Becker doubled in the first to give the Pacers a 1-0 lead, then Marywood plated three more in the fifth.  Anthony Navoro doubled in a run to start and would later score on a throwing error.  Powers would later double to bring across another run, giving the Pacers a 4-0 lead.

Bethany answered with two runs in the sixth but could not plate more as Marywood moved to 5-3 on the year.  Jerry Hobbs pitched 5.1 innings for the win.  He struck out two and allowed one earned run off three hits.  Nicholas Boyer pitched the rest of the fifth, allowing just one hit, before Colin Maldonato got the save by striking out two of three batters faced in the sixth.

Marywood closes out their spring break trip to Florida Friday with a doubleheader against Gettysburg College.
