Utica Second Half Surge Topples Men's Lacrosse

Utica, N.Y. – The Marywood University men's lacrosse team wrapped up its Spring Break with a 12-8 loss to Utica College on Thursday. The Pioneers outscored the Pacers 7-1 in the latter 32 minutes of the game.

Matt Casto and Austin Maylor each finished with a goal and two assists. Luke Shedler had a team-high two goals.

Riley Litman won 18 of 24 faceoff chances with 11 ground balls. Vinny Biancardi made 10 saves.

The Pioneers' Harrison Bower stopped 18 shots and picked up eight ground balls. Ryan Desveaux tallied five goals. Dylan Dunham and Jake Bratek each contributed three goals and an assist.

Marywood outscored Utica by a 43-39 margin and clipped the Pioneers 29-28 in ground balls. The Pacers went oh-fer in five extra man opportunities.

The Pacers took an early 2-1 lead when Zach Vaughan scored from Matt Casto at the 7:06 mark of the first quarter. The teams traded goals, and Utica's Bratek evened the scored at 5-5 with 7:11 left in the first half. Matt Mitarotonda and Vaughan scored within a nine-second span of each other to lift the Pacers to a 7-5 lead with 2:55 left.

After Dylan Dunham halved the Pioneers' deficit just before half, Utica's Bratek squared the score at 7-7 with 7:52 to go in the third. Desveaux scored back-to-back goals to put the Pioneers ahead of the Pacers.

Marywood takes a week off before hosting Immaculata University on March 24.
