Men's Lacrosse Staves Off Mighty Macs' Fourth Quarter Comeback Hopes for 12-11 Win

Immaculata, Pa. – Marywood University held off a fourth quarter Immaculata University resurgence to post a 12-11 victory on Saturday in its Colonial States Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action. It is the second consecutive season that the Pacers beat the Mighty Macs by one goal.

Trailing by five, the Mighty Macs outscored the Pacers 6-1 in the final 18 minutes. Marywood held Immaculata (2-7, 0-1 CSAC) scoreless for the last five minutes of the game to preserve the victory.

Rob Maini had a season-high five goals in the win. Austin Maylor and Matt Casto each supplied two goals and an assist.

Jeff Johnsen scored a pair of goals. Zach Vaughan had three assists.

On the other side of the field, Luke McFadden collected five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Justin Einwechter caused three turnovers.

Riley Litman went 14 of 24 from the faceoff-x with four ground balls.

Vinny Biancardi made 11 saves for the Pacers (4-4). The Macs' Tyler Frease kept away eight shots.

Immaculata was led by seven-point efforts by Brian Shultis (2g-5a) and Mike Reardon (6g-1a). Steven Long garnered a game-high six ground balls.

Maylor captained the early effort with a goal 73 seconds into regulation from Vaughan. Maini tacked on his first of five at the 7:51 mark – 40 seconds prior to Long tallying the Macs' first strike.

Three goals were collected in the final 63 seconds of the first quarter. Immac's Reardon scored a man-up goal from Matt Krewson. Then, with 38 seconds remaining, Casto tallied a man-up goal of his own from Vaughan (his third assist of the quarter). Christian Fisher finished out the first stanza from Shultis to trim the Mighty Macs' deficit to 4-3 with 12 seconds left.

Marywood had four unanswered goals in the second quarter to stretch out its lead to 8-3 at halftime.

Trailing 11-6, Immaculata began its comeback with a Shultis goal just 16 seconds following Jeff Johnsen's netter for Marywood. Reardon tacked on one just before the buzzer to slim the Pacers' lead to 11-8.

The Pacers showed a little bit of life when Maini answered the call with an unassisted tally at the 10:50 mark. Immaculata registered three strike goals over the next six minutes. Shultis directed a Long pass into goal with 4:59 to put the Mighty Macs within one goal.

Immac won the faceoff but was unable to get a shot on goal before McFadden caused a turnover and collected a ground ball. Both teams traded failed clears and turnovers. Seth D'Ver caused a turnover, but Einwechter was unable to get the clear off with 1:40 remaining.

Shultis' shot hit the post, and Biancardi made a save on a Krewson attempt with 55 seconds. D'Ver made a key ground ball in the late stages. The Pacers coughed it up to the Mighty Macs with seven seconds left, but Reardon's last-change shot sailed high.

Marywood travels down to the Delaware Valley again Wednesday to face Rosemont College.
