Women's Lacrosse Comes Up Short in 9-8 Loss to Shenandoah

Winchester, Va. – The Marywood University women's lacrosse team came within a goal of upsetting Shenandoah University to open its Spring Break trip. The Pacers fell to the Hornets 9-8 after letting up the game-deciding goal in the final six minutes.

The Hornets' Nikki Zerna tallied a free-position goal with 5:52 remaining in regulation in what turned out to be the game-winning score. Caitlin Watson won the ensuing draw control for the Pacers, but the Hornets' Maddie Albornoz made a save on a Gina Babcock shot to shut down the Pacers' final scoring attempt on goal.

Sam Bussinelli led Marywood (2-3) with three goals and an assist. Bussinelli has a hat trick in each of the Pacers' five games so far this season.

Caitlin Watson finished with a pair of goals to move within three of the 100 Point Club. Zoe Simeone had two goals and three ground balls.

Shenandoah (6-2) received hat tricks from Zorrilla and Nikki Zerna. Alyson Bittinger managed three caused turnovers, and Annie McCorry provided five draw controls.

Marywood goalkeeper Mary Leahy had her most productive game of the season with 12 saves. Her counterpart Maddie Albornoz finished with 11 saves and seven ground balls.

With the game tied at two apiece, Shenandoah pulled ahead with three consecutive goals, keeping the Pacers scoreless over a 23-minute span. Zerna's woman-up FPS goal with 25:51 remaining in the game stretched the Hornets' lead to 5-2.

Watson ignited a Pacers rally of three unanswered goals in 3:05. Bussinelli's unassisted goal evened the score line at 5-5 with 20:21. Shenandoah struck right back with a netter by Zorilla from Alexandra Simonson. After Simeone redirected a Bussinelli feed into net that squared the score at six, Shenandoah came back with a pair of goals – another Zorrilla-from-Simonson giving the Hornets an 8-6 advantage with 16:15 left.

Marywood had one last comeback effort in the tank. Healy halved the Pacers' deficit with an unassisted goal with 11:46 left. Bussinelli came through again with the equalizer just 67 seconds later.

Marywood outshot Shenandoah 31-24. The Hornets held on to a slight 25-20 advantage in ground balls but topped the Pacers 13-6 in draw controls.

The Pacers head back north to travel to SUNY New Paltz on Friday at 3:30 pm.
