Marywood Splits with Defending Champs Neumann to Open CSAC Play

Aston, Pa. – Marywood University opened their 2018 Colonial States Athletic Conference slate with a split at defending Champion Neumann University Monday afternoon.  The Pacers move to 4-6 (1-1 CSAC) after the games while the Knights stand at 7-4 (3-1).

Kirstie Alvarez pitched the Pacers to a win in game one as Marywood held off a late rally attempt from the hosts for a 5-4 win.  Alvarez (3-2) struck out two in the complete-game effort.

Jackie Burke went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs while Kate O'Meara and Alvarez each added an RBI.  Burke and Sarah Witte both had doubles for Marywood.

Marywood opened a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat when Kaitlyn Epler reached on a bunt single, stole second and moved to third after consecutive walks.  Burke singled through the left side to bring Epler across but Neumann would get out of the inning without allowing any more damage.

The Pacers scored twice in the third, once off a RBI double down the leftfield line from Burke (scoring Alexa Scala) and the other when Burke would score as the Knights caught a runner trying to steal second.

Down 3-0, Neumann got back into the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth, but Marywood would do the same in the sixth and seventh to build a 5-2 lead.  In the sixth, O'Meara singled to right to bring Witte home, who had doubled to left field in the Pacers' second at-bat of the inning. In the seventh, Marywood's run came on an Alvarez RBI single to right which scored Heather Schultz.

Neumann got two back in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run single up the middle but their comeback bid fell short when Alvarez got the last batter to fly out to left to end the game.

Neumann would score early and often in the second game, plating two in the first and five in the second for a 7-0 lead. The Knights tacked on four more in the third to go up 11-0.

Katie Siano (1-2) suffered the loss after allowing all 11 Neumann runs.  Kelly McKenna pitched a scoreless two innings of relief, allowing just two hits.

Marywood broke up the Knights' shutout bid when Annie Heyen singled in Burke, who had a double in the top of the fourth.

Marywood threated more damage in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded, Burke had a sacrifice fly to left but the runner at third was called for leaving the bag early, resulting in a double play.  The next batter popped out to end the game.

Burke, Mackie Goodwin, O'Meara and Heyen collected one hit apiece as the Pacers got outhit 13-4 in the nightcap.

Marywood is slated to host Rosemont College in a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 3:00 pm.
