Wilkes Takes Non-Conference Tilt from Pacers

Scranton, Pa. - Visiting Wilkes University outscored Marywood University 10-3 over the final five innings of play to come out of Scranton with a 12-5 non-conference win over the hosts in baseball action Tuesday afternoon. The game was called after eight innings of play due to rain.  Marywood dropped to 5-7 with the loss while the Colonels improved to 7-9.

A two-run homer down the left field line from Wilkes' Nicholas Capozzi in the second inning opened the scoring, but the Pacers answered with a two-run shot of their own from David Ortiz in teh bottom half of the frame to tie the game up.

After a scoreless third, Wilkes scored a single unearned run on a Marywood error in the third to take a one run lead.  Both teams scored twice in the fifth, making it a 5-4 ballgame, before Wilkes opened things up with two in the seventh and five in the eighth for the win. Marywood managed one run in the bottom of the eighth before the game was halted.

Ortiz finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored for the Pacers.  Michael Tempel was 2-for-4 while Jake Schuster had a double.  Scott Becker accounted for Marywood's other RBI.  Wilkes had 11 hits in the game to Marywood's seven while the Pacers committed five errors in the loss.

Joey Castellani (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits in five innings of work. He struck out seven.  Francis Navatta (1-1) got the win for the Colonels, fanning three and allowing three earned runs on five hits in four full innings.

Marywood is scheduled for a doubleheader at SUNY Purchase Thursday. Game one begins at noon.
