Two Late Inning Comebacks Give Pacers Sweep of Purchase

Purchase, N.Y. – Marywood University swept Purchase College to even its record Thursday in non-conference baseball action. The Pacers defeated the Panthers by scores of 11-3 and 8-5 in the doubleheader.

In the nightcap, Marywood (7-7) scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to break open a tie game for an extra innings victory.

The Pacers put the winning run thanks to three Purchase miscues in the field. Morgan Theobald led off with a bunt that was misfielded by the pitcher. Michael Tempel also reached on an error by the pitcher, allowing Theobald to cross home plate for the winning run.

After the Panthers logged two outs, they had the inning seemingly finished with a strikeout of Scott Becker; however, a passed ball allowed Tempel to score from home. John Mandarano drove in the final run with a double.

Mandarano and Mitch Clemons each finished with a pair of hits, a double, and three RBI. Jake Schuster reached four times and scored twice. Tempel also had a two-bagger.

Colin Maldonato secured the victory with two innings pitched without giving up an earned run. Salvatore Monello finished 2 2/3 innings of hitless ball.

Trevor Powers struck out three batters in the bottom of the ninth for a save. He finished the day with a win and a save.

Marywood trailed 4-2 before Clemons gave the Pacers a one-run lead with a bases-loaded, -clearing double in the fifth. Purchase sent the game into extra innings on a seventh inning errant throw.

In the opener, Marywood came back from a 3-2 deficit with nine unanswered runs in the final two innings. The Pacers had four run-scoring extra base hits in the comeback effort.

Kevin McDonough gave the Pacers a 4-3 lead in the sixth with a single to right field that scored Mandarano and Becker. Pinch hitter Austin Takvor doubled to right to bring home McDonough for a 5-3 lead.

Heading into the seventh, back-to-back triples put the game out of reach. Becker hit a three-bagger to right-center that scored a pair of runs. Theobald followed suite with a triple to right-center to allow Becker to touch home. A McDonough double scored Theobald.

McDonough went 2 for 3 with three RBI and two runs. Becker hit in both at-bats with two runs and three RBI.

Jake Schuster and Powers each scored twice. Tempel had a two RBI game.

Powers struck out three in two innings of relief work for the winning decision. Jerry Hobbs gave up two earned runs in 4 2/3 innings with four strikeouts.

Marywood will head to Aurora, N.Y. to play on the turf against Wells College on Monday.
