Baseball Extends Win Streak to Four, Sweeps Cobleskill

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University held SUNY Cobleskill in check all afternoon as the Pacers extended their win streak to four with a doubleheader sweep of the Fighting Tigers in non-conference baseball action on a chilly and windy Thursday afternoon in Scranton.  The Pacers improved to 9-7 with the sweep while Cobleskill fell to 1-13.

In the opener, seven Marywood players picked up RBIs and the Pacers used a pair of big innings in the fourth and sixth to earn a 8-1 win.  Marywood grabbed a 1-0 lead when Dayloin Barron's infield single scored David Ortiz from third.

Cobleskill tied the game in their next at-bat as they used back-to-back doubles to knot things up.  Zyere Molinaro doubled to right with two outs to start things and came home on a double from Jacob Hoffee.

Marywood tried to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the third, but Molinaro made a great diving stop on a ball going up the middle to end the Pacers' threat to take the lead.  The Fighting Tigers then threatened to take the lead in the top of the fourth after a one out double to deep center from Eddy Garcia, but after moving to third on a dropped third-stike putout play, got stranded there on a deep flyout to left.

The Pacers would then break things open, scoring three times in the fourth for a 4-1 lead.  After two walks and a strikeout opened the inning, Shane Smith singled to center to bring in a run.  A passed ball moved runners to second and third, and and Austin Takvor would score on another passed ball to make it 3-1.  Morgan Theobald would then single through the right side to bring home Smith.

In the sixth, Marywood plated four runs to put the game out of reach.  John Mandarano doubled home a run and a batter later Jake Schuster singled him in.  The potential third out of the inning was misjudged in the outfield due to the heavy winds, and Scott Becker would take advantage by doubling deep to right center to score Schuster all the way from first.  Mitch Clemons would then double to left to bring Becker in for the final score of the game.

Jerry Hobbs (2-1) struck out eight batters over six innings of work, allowing one earned run on just four hits for the visitors.  Colin Maldonato pitched a hitless and scoreless seventh for the Pacers, striking out one in relief.

In the nightcap, despite allowing three first inning runs, none of which were earned, Salvatore Monello battled back to earn the win on the mound. He struck out three over four innings of work to improve to 2-0 on the year.  Joey Castellani then did the rest, earning a three-inning save, striking out three and not allowing a hit.

Schuster continued his hot bat in the nightcap, going 2-for4 with two RBI and a double plus two runs scored.  Trevor Powers (2-for-3, 1 RBI) and Clemons (1-for-2, 1 RBI) also doubled in the 7-3 win.

After a leadoff single from Cobleskill's Molinaro to open the game, he moved to second on a stolen base and to third on a single to left.  Both runners would score at the next at-bat on an outfield error.  Cobleskill would their third unearned run of the inning on a passed ball later in the frame.

Marywood answered with a solo run in the bottom of the second, and came alive in teh third with a four-run inning.  Powers doubled to right center to score a run, and he and Schuster would later score on a two-run single from Ben Gravel.

In the sixth, Schuster would double in Powers and score on a Clemons double to right as Marywood added two insurance runs for the 7-3 win.

Marywood will be at The University of Scranton Monday for a 5:00 pm single non-conference game.
