Bussinelli Lifts Pacers to First Win over Arcadia with Overtime Goal

Glenside, Pa. – Senior attack Sam Bussinelli scored a game-tying and -winning goals to lift Marywood University to a 10-9 overtime victory over Arcadia University on Sunday in women's lacrosse. It is the Pacers' first win over Arcadia in five times in program history.

Marywood won its first overtime game since a double overtime winner over Immaculata in 2013.

Bussinelli scored the game-winner just 14 seconds into the overtime period. Caitlin Watson controlled possession on the draw control to set up the goal.

Bussinelli finished with a hat trick for the game. She is now just five points shy of 200 for her career.

Watson finished with two goals and four draw controls. Gwyneth Gleason had a goal, an assist, four caused turnovers and three draw controls.

Molly Yelencsics tallied five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Gina Babcock also had five ground balls.

Mary Leahy recorded her first career victory in goal with 10 saves.

Neither team led by more than one over the course of the game.

Marywood (2-1) opened the game with freshman Natalie Walker's first career goal to even the score at 1-1. Watson put the Pacers ahead with 22:35 on the clock in the first.

Zoe Simeone scored off of a Gleason pass with 1:22 left in the first period to take a 6-5 lead. But the Knights' Shannon Ryan responded with an unassisted goal to send the game into a tie at halftime.

The Pacers found themselves in a 7-6 hole when Marie Brockman gave the Knights the first goal of the second half. Erin Healy ended 11 minutes of scoreless action with an equalizer from Katrina Kelly. Bussinelli then lighted the Pacers to an 8-7 lead with 12:06 remaining on a woman-up goal.

Arcadia fought back with netters from Julia Imbert and Nicole Hutson to push ahead 9-8 with 5:10 left in the regulation. Nineteen seconds later, Bussinelli sent the game into overtime. Leahy made a pair of saves in the final five minutes, and Sami Stein caused a turnover to retain possession for the final minute.

Ryan finished with two goals and two assists for the Knights. Imbert and Victoria Molitor each scored twice. Veandra Selby corralled seven ground balls and stopped 13 shots, including one with 34 seconds left.

Marywood won the ground ball game with a 27-19 advantage. The Knights committed 30 turnovers to the Pacers' 19.

Marywood will host Lycoming College on Wednesday.
