Late Game Heroics Lift Men's Lacrosse over St. Joseph's In 9-8 Thriller

Patchogue, N.Y. – Austin Maylor scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes remaining to give Marywood University an 8-7 win over St. Joseph's College (Long Island) on Wednesday in men's lacrosse action. The Pacers delivered the Eagles their first loss of the season.

Maylor ended a 7-7 tie with an unassisted goal with 1:50 remaining in the game. He finished with two goals.

The Eagles won possession off of the faceoff to give themselves a chance at an equalizer. Vinny Biancardi made a save on a Casey Hickey shot with 32 seconds left, and Justin Einwechter forced a caused turnover to finish out the game.

Luke Shedler scored two goals and two assists to lead the Pacers with four points. Zach Vaughan contributed two goals and an assist.

Rob Maini totaled a team-best six ground balls.

Biancardi was electric in goal with 16 saves, yielding just seven St. Joseph's goals.

Zak Jones had a hat trick for the Eagles. Declan Canevari won 13 of 19 faceoffs to couple with eight ground balls.

The Pacers raced to an early 4-1 lead through the first 23 minutes.

Shedler found the net with 16 seconds remaining in the first quarter to put the Pacers on top. For his encore, he scored on a Matt Casto feed at 11:57 left in the half. Casto tallied a man-up goal from Vaughan to stretch the lead to three.
St. Joseph's found its rhythm with a pair of goals. Maylor tacked on his first with 38 seconds before halftime to go into the break with a 5-3 advantage.

The teams traded goals back and forth twice in the second half. Vaughan put a Shedler pass past the goalkeeper for a 7-5 lead with 8:04. St. Joseph's was undetermined with netters from Jones and Michael Benasutti with in a three-minute span, evening the score with 4:20 on the clock.

St. Joseph's outshot Marywood by a 37-28 margin and won the ground ball game with a 36-31 advantage.

Keeping with a theological theme, Marywood will head to St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday.
