Marywood Splits with Gwynedd

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University got four strong innings from Trevor Powers and a three inning save from Colin Maldonato as the Pacers took the opening game of a doubleheader over Gwynedd Mercy, 1-0.  Scott Becker drove in the Pacers' lone run but it was enough to give Marywood their first CSAC win of the season.

The Griffins responded with a 15-5 win in the nine inning nightcap.  After the split, Marywood stands at 11-10 (1-3 CSAC) while Gwynedd Mercy stands at 9-11 (3-3 CSAC).

Powers was solid over the opening four innings of game one, striking out four and allowing just four hits en route to his second win of the season (2-0).  Maldonato came in and did the rest, striking out three and allowing just three hits to earn his second save.

Marywood, who was out-hit 7-4 in the opener, got the only run they would need in the bottom half of the first. After a Jake Schuster double to right, Becker singled to left to bring Schuster across. The Pacers' pitchers and defense did the rest from there in the shutout win.

Game two was quite different as the two teams combined for 23 hits, 16 of which came off of the visitor's bats.  Gwynedd Mercy took an early 3-0 lead in their first at-bats, but Marywood answered with two and then, trailing 4-2 after two innings, tied the game up in the third thanks to a RBI single from Schuster and a RBI from John Mandarano.

But from there the Griffins' bats stayed hot and the visitor's pitchers kept Marywood batters in check as Gwynedd plated three runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to break the game open.

Billy McAuliffe (1-2) suffered the loss. Michael Tempel was 2-for-3 in the nightcap but was the lone Marywood player with multiple hits in game two. Austin Takvor had a solo homer in the seventh.

Marywood travels to Immaculata for a nine inning CSAC game Monday at 3:30 pm.
