Late Rally Lifts Marywood to Sweep of Immaculata

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University scored three times in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Pacers rallied from a early 7-2 deficit to win 9-7, completing a series sweep of Immaculata University Wednesday afternoon in Scranton.  The win moves the Pacers to 13-10 overall and 3-3 in the league while the Mighty Macs slipped to 8-16 (3-5).

Colin Maldonato, who came on and pitched two scoreless innings of relief, got the win to improve to 2-0 on the year.  Trevor Powers, who went 5-for-5 at the plate with a pair of RBI, moved from centerfield to the mound in the ninth to get his third save of the year.

The Mighty Macs took a early 2-0 lead but Marywood answered right back, taking advantage of four wild pitches in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 2-2.

Immaculata looked in control through four innings of play, as they got three more in the second and one in each the third and fourth to build a 7-2 lead. Scott Becker would single in a run for the Pacers in the bottom of the fifth to cut into the visitor's lead.

After Immaculata starter Eddie Decker came out of the game through five innings and with a 7-3 lead, Marywood slowly chipped away at their deficit.  The Pacers scored three times in the sixth to make it a ballgame but left the inning trailing by one thanks to a bases loaded, diving stop from Mighty Mac second baseman Pat Devenney.  Marywood's three runs came on a Michael Tempel RBI single to right and a two-run single through the left side from Powers.

With both teams being held off the board in the seventh, Maldonato again kept the visitors from doing more damage in the eighth, setting up a chance for the Pacers' bats to do the rest.

In the bottom of the eighth, Powers singled to left and moved tho third on a Jake Schuster single.  Becker would then drive Powers across with a sac fly to right center, making it a 7-7 game.  Mitch Clemons would then double to right center, bringing Schuster home all the way from first, and would score on the next play as John Mandarano singled through the right side.

Powers did the rest, getting three pop-outs to end the game.

Marywood will travel to Centenary University for a Saturday CSAC doubleheader. The Pacers and Cyclones will play at Skylands Stadium in Augusta, New Jersey.  Game one begins at noon.
