Marywood Splits at Scranton

Scranton, Pa. - Kirstie Alvarez won her fifth straight game and Sarah Witte belted a three-run home to help Marywood take game one of a twinbill 7-4 over The University of Scranton. The Royals responded with a 9-0, five-inning win in the nightcap.

Marywood moves to 13-15 on the year while Scranton stands at 22-6 after the split.

With a 7-4 lead and the bases loaded against her in the opening game, Alvarez got the potential winning run looking to get the win.  She moves to 9-5 on the year after striking out two and allowing two earned runs over her complete-game effort.  

Marywood triailed 2-0 early but used a four-run fourth to take a two-run lead.  Annie Heyen doubled down the left-field line to bring home one run, then Marywood tied the game by taking advantage of a Scranton error.  Alexa Scala then doubled down the right-field line to bring two more across, putting the Pacers up 4-2.

Marywood added to that lead with a three-run fifth, all of which came on Witte's deep homer to left. 

Scranton got one back in the bottom of the seventh but Alvarez hung on the for the win.  Heyen fininished the opener 2-for-4, both of her hits doubles.

In the five-inning nightcap, Marywood was limited to just three hits, one apiece from Heather Schultz, Kelsey Killeen and Jackie Burke, in the 9-0 loss. Kelly McKenna (0-2) suffered the loss for the Pacers.  

The Pacers will travel to Allentown Friday to take on Cedar Crest College in a CSAC twinbill beginning at 3:00 pm.
