Pacers Rally for Split, Alvarez’s Homers Not Enough in Opener

Allentown, Pa. – A pair of three-run homers and school record six RBI from Kirstie Alvarez was not enough as Cedar Crest rallied for a 9-8 win in the opening game of a CSAC twinbill Friday. Marywood rallied from a 9-2 deficit in the seventh inning of game two to force extra frames, where they went on to a 13-12 win in 11 innings.

Marywood is now 14-16 (9-7 CSAC) on the year while the Falcons move to 15-15 (8-8). Marywood avoided what would have been the first ever sweep by the Falcons over the Pacers thanks to their rally in the nightcap.

In the opener, Alvarez tied the Marywood single game record for RBI with six, matching program bests from Diana Butash (2014 vs. Cedar Crest) and Ashley Dommes (2012 vs. Keystone).  Alvarez's two homers were one shy of the single game record for the Pacers set by Butash in 2014 versus Immaculata.  The two homers puts Alvarez in a three-way tie for second most in a single game with Kaitlyn Brennan (2011 vs. Cabrini) and Megan Haikes (2008 vs. Northwestern, Minnesota).

Marywood led 1-0 early thanks to an unearned run in the first and Alvarez helped her own cause with a three-run blast to right center in the third, putting Marywood up 4-0. Cedar Crest would battle back with one run in the bottom of the third and tie the game up with a three-run fourth.

Alvarez responded again in the fifth with another three-run shot, again to right center, giving herself some cushion for the time being. Alvarez would need each of those six runs she batted in, plus more, to keep the Pacers in the game.

Marywood took advantage of a Cedar Crest miscue to give themselves a two-run (8-6) lead in the sixth.  Mackie Goodwin reached on a throwing error and advanced to second when the ball skirted past the Falcon first baseman.  Goodwin moved to third on a pop-out, and came home on a two-out single to right center from Alexa Scala

Once again, the hosts would not go away quietly. A double to right center in the bottom of the sixth followed by a RBI single up the middle made it an 8-7 ballgame.

After starting the seventh with a single, a one-out double from Dallas Horning brought the tying run home for the Falcons with Horning advancing to third on the throw home. A game-winning, RBI single up the middle from Molly Schnaubelt ended the game and Alvarez's five-game winning streak on the mound, giving the Falcons the 9-8 walk-off win.

Alvarez gave up a season high 18 hits while Marywood managed 12, including two apiece from Heather Schultz, Scala, Killeen, Alvarez and Goodwin. Alvarez struck out seven in the loss, falling to 9-6 on the year.

In game two, Marywood jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first thanks to a pair of unearned runs. Cedar Crest would cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the first thanks to a RBI single up the middle.

Cedar Crest tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth when Riley Tremblay doubled to start the inning, moved to third on a single and came home on a RBI single to center from Patricia Dalton.  A Courtney Constable sac fly to center would bring in the go ahead and Kaylee Martinez hit a two-run shot to give the hosts a 5-2 lead. The Falcons added four more in the sixth to build a 9-2 lead.

Down to their last at-bat and with one, Marywood did the unthinkable and battled all the way back to tie the game at 9-9 and force extra frames.  Sarah Witte started things off with a RBI sac fly.  Jackie Burke singled in a run, and Mackie Goodwin reached on an error that also saw a run score, making it 9-5.

Sara Hayes then doubled to bring home Goodwin, and Annie Heyen doubled in Hayes.  Schultz reached on an error that allowed pinch runner Ally Latham to score and then then Alexa Scala singled to bring home Schultz and tie the game.

The two teams battled through scoreless eighth and ninth innings and would both score two runs in the 10th.  Marywood then scored two unearned runs in the top of the 11th and held Cedar Crest to just one in their last chance at-bat to escape Allentown with a split.

Alvarez (10-6) ended up pitching the final seven innings of relief to get the win.

Marywood hosts Cairn (14-14, 6-8) in a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1:00 pm.
