Pacers Come Up Short to Cavaliers in 13-12 Nailbiter

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University came within a goal of ending Cabrini University's six-year Colonial States Athletic Conference women's lacrosse winning streak in a 13-12 loss on Saturday. The Pacers secure the No. 2 seed in the CSAC playoffs and will face the highest remaining seed in the semifinals on Wednesday, May 2.

The Pacers' seven-game winning streak was brought to a halt.

Marywood had a two-goal advantage when Caitlin Watson gave the Pacers' a 9-7 lead with 24:01 remaining in the second half. Cabrini scored four-straight goals over a six-minute span, and the Pacers were unable to recoup from the deficit.

The Pacers came within a goal of the Cavaliers three times in the final 13 minutes. Erin Healy scored a woman-up goal with 12:33 left. Sam Bussinelli added a goal with 5:17. After the Cavs' Emily Course returned the lead back to two and Gina Babcock scooped a ground ball, Bussinelli found the net to make it 13-12 with 2:59 left in the game.

Marywood was not without its chances in the late minutes. Gwyneth Gleason won the draw control, and Watson's shot was saved with just under two minutes left. After Michaela DiLorenzo picked up a ground ball on a failed Cabrini transition, Katrina Kelly sent a shot that was blocked with 68 seconds left. Kylie Winton picked up the ground ball before being swarmed by Cabrini defenders, ultimately giving the Cavaliers their final possession.

Bussinelli led the Pacers with four goals and three assists for seven points. She moves within an assist of Marywood's single-season record.

Gleason and Watson both finished with a hat trick. Gleason won six draw controls and three ground balls.

Zoe Simeone garnered a pair of assists.

Marywood posted a season-high 44 ground balls for the game. Sami Stein had a team season-high eight ground balls. Michaela DiLorenzo, Mary Leahy and Gina Babcock each totaled five ground balls apiece.

Defensively, Haley Risi finished her last regular season home game by amassing a team season-high five caused turnovers. Leahy made nine saves.

Marywood honored seniors Risi, Watson, Rachelle Woodhouse, Kelly, Healy, Kelly Ciabattone and Bussinelli prior to the game.

The Pacers went ahead first when Simeone evaded a fleet of Cabrini midfielders to get the ball upfield; Gleason and Bussinelli teamed up a mere three minutes into regulation. Cabrini found its rhythm with four straight goals to take the largest lead (4-1). Marywood came back punching with four-straight goals of its own.

Bussinelli put the Pacers ahead 5-4 off of a Simeone feed. Cabrini squared the game at 5-5 with a tally from Jackie Neary. Watson regained the Pacers' lead, and Simeone delivered another goal-scoring setup to Bussinelli for a 7-5 advantage. A Crouse goal halved the Pacers' lead heading into halftime.

Avery Murphy led the Cavaliers with six goals, three assists, nine points, and 11 draw controls. Jackie Neary broke a CSAC record with six draw controls and four caused turnovers.

Devon Scharf earned the win with 12 saves.

The box score showed a near-balanced matchup. The Cavs outshot the Pacers 36-33 and 24-22 on target. Both teams committed 27 turnovers. Marywood was 75 percent on clear chances, and Cabrini was successful on two-thirds of its attempts.

Marywood won the ground ball game (44-31). The Cavs edged the Pacers 15-13 in draws. Cabrini had 18 FPS attempts to the Pacers' four.

Marywood (9-6, 7-1 CSAC) will head to Susquehanna University this week for its regular season finale.
