Baseball Outlasts Scranton for 19-18 Win

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University's baseball team scored three runs in their last at-bat to outlast The University of Scranton 19-18 in non-conference baseball action Monday afternoon at The U's new Volpe Field.  Michael Tempel tied a program record with six hits in the win.

Marywood moves to 10-7 on the year with the marathon win while Scranton fell to 8-9. Marywood set a new team record with 50 at-bats in the game and tied the second-highest team mark with 23 hits.

In a game that featured numerous lead changes, Marywood would plate eight of their 19 runs in the first and ninth innings. The Pacers broke out of the gates early, building a 5-0 lead in their first at-bat.

Scranton answered with one run in the bottom half of the inning, and after Marywood went up 6-1 the Royals took their first lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a six-run inning.  Marywood reclaimed the lead in their next at-bat, plating five more to take a 11-8 lead.

Marywood would go up 13-9 in the fourth, but Scranton kept them off the board over the next two frames and scored six runs of their own over that span to take a 15-13 lead.

Marywood tied the game in the seventh, but Scranton quickly reclaimed the lead in the bottom half. Each team would score once in the eighth as the hosts lead 18-16, but Marywood's rally thanks to a three-run ninth sent the Pacers to their fifth straight win.

In the end, the Royals were only held off the board for two at-bats, once in the bottom of the fourth and once in their final inning at the plate.

Marywood used five pitchers in the game with Nicholas Boyer (1-0) getting his first win.  Scranton would throw nine hurlers in all in the loss.

For the Pacers, Jake Schuster had a homer and double while Trevor Powers, Scott Becker, Mitch Clemons, and Morgan Thoebald all had doubles.  Schuster's homer was the first ever over Scranton's new "Purple Monster" in centerfield, marked as 420 feet.  Tempel had a triple as part of his record-setting six-hit game. He finished the game 6-for-7 with three RBI and five runs scored. Tempel's new record of six hits tied a program mark set by Vince Rebar a year ago. Rebar's six-hits came in a seven-inning contest in game one of a doubleheader versus Cabrini University. Tempel also set a new program record with five singles, besting 10 others, including Rebar and current head coach Jason Thiel, who shared the previous record of four singles in a game.

Schuster finished the game 3-for-5 with four RBI.  Becker was 3-for-5 with three RBI and four runs scored while Powers was 4-for-6 with a pair of RBI and runs scored.  Clemons finished the game 4-for-6 with four RBI.

Marywood had a slight 23-19 advantage in hits and had 20 RBI to Scranton's 16.

The Pacers open CSAC play tomorrow with a trip to Langhorne to face Cairn University.
