Geneseo Topples Field Hockey in Season Opener

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - An early second half goal from Lindsey Quinn was not enough as SUNY Geneseo toppled Marywood University 3-1 in the season opener for both teams at the Betty Richey field hockey tournament hosted by Vassar College.

Quinn's tally came in the second minute of the second half and knotted the game at 1-1, but the Knights (1-0) scored two unanswered goals in the final 16 minutes of the game to take the opener.  Marywood (1-0) got an assist from Gwyneth Gleason on Quinn's goal.

Grace Dempsey put Geneseo up 1-0 in the 17th minute of action as she got past several defenders before beating Kerri Mountz, who got tripped up in the goal area before she could make the save.

After Quinn tied the game early in the 38th minute by finishing off a goalkeeper deflection, the Knights' Elisa Arcara sprinted down the right side to finish off a clean pass from Haley Clark, netting what would be the game-winner in the 55th minute.  SUNY Geneseo tacked on an insurance goal in the 68th when Hayley Fonfara scored from five yards out.

Geneseo out-shot Marywood 13-2 for the game and put 12 of those shots on goal, forcing Mountz to make nine saves.

The Pacers will look for their first win of 2018 when they take on Manhattanville at 1:00 pm Saturday.  The Valiants lost to host Vassar 10-0 on Friday.  Live stats and video are available for Saturday's contest by going to the field hockey schedule page.
