Albright Spoils Women's Soccer Opener

Reading, Pa. - Marywood University grabbed an early lead but could not contain Albright College's Lauren Haley as the Pacers fell to the Lions 5-2 in the 2018 women's soccer opener for both squads.

Marywood, who is notorious for playing a tough non-conference slate to open seasons, now is 0-8-2 i their last 10 season openers. Their last season opening win came in 2008 when they beat Johnson & Wales 3-1 at the Hartwick College tournament.

The Pacers not only tallied first, but they also had a 16-14 advantage in shots for the game. But Haley's performance, coupled with a penalty kick goal and a free kick goal, put the game out of reach. Albright also put 10 of their 14 shots on goal compared to just seven of 16 for the Pacers.

Ashley Kruchinsky headed in a long cross from right-back Kayla Schmadtke just 2:50 in the contest to put Marywood up 1-0.  Unfortunately, that lead lasted only two minutes before Haley escaped the Pacers' back-line and went in for a 1v1 breakaway before beating Aly Moyer to tie things up.

In the 32nd minute, Haley did it again, notching her second unassisted tally of the afternoon on another breakaway.

Three minutes into the second half, Haley completed the season-opening hat-trick and making it a 4-1 ballgame.  Emily Mollica would take advantage of a foul at the edge of the 18-yard box and beat Moyer to the far post on a direct kick from 22-out.

Kassandra Riemer ended the Lions' scoring streak and picked up her first collegiate goal when she headed home a Julie Youngman corner kick.

Moyer made four saves in the loss during 69:29 of action while Haley Taylor played the final 20:31 in goal, making one save.  Alexis Tunney got the win in goal for the hosts before being replaced by Payton Bogatch for the final 25:12 of the game.

In addition to their 16-14 advantage in shots, Marywood held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Marywood will host Lebanon Valley College Wednesday night at 7:00 pm in the Pacers' home opener.
