Cross Country Downs Immaculata in Atlantic East Preview Meet

Scott Twp., Pa. - Marywood University opened the 2018 cross country season with a dual meet victory at the Atlantic East Preview Meet Saturday in Scott Township. The Pacers won by a perfect 15-50 score over Immaculata University on the men's side, and the Marywood women triumphed with a 23-32 victory over the Mighty Macs.

The meet served as a tune-up for the inaugural Atlantic East Conference Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships on Oct. 27. Marywood is hosting the inaugural championship meet at the Lakeland High School course. The men ran a 6K race, and the women competed on a 4K course.

Freshman Katie Shea won her first collegiate race with a time of 18:01. She finished 16 seconds ahead of the field. Ashleigh Clarke came in second place in 18:27.

Kaleigh Orr and Katie Bennett secured important points for the Pacers in fifth and sixth place, respectively. Orr ran a 19:19, and Bennett clocked in at 19:37. Freshman Caroline Burak came in ninth place in her first college race at 21:12.

On the men's side, David Haines picked up where he left off from last year's NCAA qualifying campaign. Haines finished in 21:04.

Marywood took the top seven spots in the men's field. Chris Golembeski was in stride with Haines through 4K with a second-place finish of 21:34. Nate Skrutski provided a third-place finish in 23:03. Mike Kelly came in fourth in 24:18.

The Pacers' field was rounded out by Stephen Torres (24:50), Christian Scotti (25:54), and Andrew Montgomery (25:55).

Marywood competes next at Misericordia University on Sept. 15.
