Volleyball Starts Season Winless at North Country Invitational

Canton, N.Y. – The Marywood University women's volleyball team dropped the first three matches of the season at the North Country Invitational. The Pacers lost in three sets to SUNY Geneseo and St. Lawrence Univesity in Canton, N.Y. on Friday before coming short in a four-set match against Clarkson University on Saturday in Potsdam, N.Y.
 
Gabriella Santos was selected to the All-Tournament team after leading the Pacers in kills for all three matches.
 
SUNY Geneseo 3, Marywood 0
 
Marywood lost to SUNY Geneseo by scores of 25-18, 25-18, 25-12.
 
Santos led the Pacers with five kills and a .267 attack percentage. Sara Burgos provided 10 assists. The defensive effort was led by Sam Compton and Brenna Kelley with seven digs apiece.
 
St. Lawrence 3, Marywood 0
 
The Saints prevailed by scores of 25-13, 25-18, 25-20. Marywood bettered its attack percentage to .133, and St. Lawrence shot .167 for the match.
 
Santos totaled eight kills and a .316 attack percentage. Jordan Vossler reached double figures with 13 digs, and Sara Burgos provided 14 assists.
 
Clarkson 3, Marywood 1
 
The Pacers won their first set of the season against the Golden Knights. Clarkson prevailed by sscores of 25-10, 25-14, 22-25, 25-14.
 
Santos was the leading attack for the third straight match with eight kills. Nicole Cashman registered an invite-high four aces, and Attwood matched Santos with three blocks.
 
Burgos helped her team's cause with 20 assists and nine digs. Vossler led defensively with 19 digs, and Compton contributed nine digs.
 
In the first set, Clarkson scored the first nine points and led by as much as 17-3 before the Pacers' attack had their first kill. Marywood held an early 3-1 lead in the second set but the Golden Knights won 10 of the next 11 points.
 
In the Pacers' lone win, Marywood jumped out to a 5-1 lead on Vossler's ace. Clarkson came back to take the lead and found themselves with a 22-19 advantage. On Burgos' serves, Marywood closed out the match with six unanswered points. A pair of attack errors allowed the Pacers to retake the lead, and Santos secured the set with a kill.
 
In the fourth set, Marywood was in arm's reach at a 16-13 deficit. Clarkson finished by garnering nine of the last 10 points.
 
Marywood travels to Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday.
