Sheerin's Record-Setting Kills, Burgos' Serves Spark Pacers to Five-Set Win over Lions

Reading, Pa. – Marywood University scored 12 out of the final 14 points in the deciding fifth set to down Albright College 3-2 Thursday in women's volleyball. The Pacers trailed 10-3 before posting five- and six-point runs to down the Lions.

The Pacers won by scores of 22-25, 27-25, 22-25, 25-13 15-12. They shot .183 for the game to the Lions' .074. Marywood led Albright offensively in points (85-51), kills (55-38), aces (18-11) and blocks (12-2).

Peri Sheerin set a school record with 23 kills, eclipsing a mark of 22 set three times by Emily Fillman (2010) and Ashley Zalewski (2012, 2014). Sheerin posted an attack percentage of .333. She contributed for seven blocks (3 solo-4 assists), along with one ace.

Nicole Cashman was the lone other player with double-digit kills. She added 10 kills, six aces, and 13 digs.

Sara Burgos also provided six aces with 12 digs. She finished with the fourth-most assists (46) for a five-set match in program history.

Mikayla Attwood finished with five blocks (three solo-two assist) and eight kills.

Defensively, Jordan Vossler tallied 31 digs. Annie Heyen (18) and Sam Compton (15) also reached double digits for digs in the match.

In the first set, Marywood's near-epic comeback came just short. Trailing 24-13, Marywood won nine straight points facing game point on Vossler's serves. Albright eventually forced an attack error to prevail 25-22.

Marywood had a six-point lead that was squandered in the second set. The teams went back-and-forth with a 25-25 tie. Burgos evened the match score with a service ace.

In the third set, Albright took the match lead by winning five of the last six points. With a 21-20 Marywood lead, the Lions garnered three straight points. Damaris Gomez closed out the 25-22 win with a kill.

The Pacers shot .231 in the fourth set to force their second fifth set of the season.

Albright jumped to a 9-2 lead on seven straight points via Kaitlyn Chell serves in the fifth. Facing a 10-3 deficit, Marywood went on a six-point run, thanks to three Sheerin kills and two Cashman aces. Albright held on to a 12-10 lead; however, five straight points finished off the match. Following a pair of attack errors to even the score, Burgos finished the match with three straight service aces.

Marywood comes back to Northeastern Pennsylvania to travel to Clarks Summit University on Saturday at 10 a.m.
