Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University picked up a pair of wins Thursday night in a non-conference tri-match over regional rival Misericordia University and Penn College. The Pacers triumphed over the Cougars by a score of 3-1 and the Wildcats by a score of 3-0. Marywood moves to 8-4, is currently on a five match win streak, and are undefeated thus far at home.
In the night's first match against the Cougars, the Pacers trailed for the majority of the first set, facing a deficit as great as seven points. The Pacers mounted a comeback throughout the tail end of the opener, including a run of five straight points to take the lead for the first time at 19-18. Marywood continued to ride the momentum and proceeded to take the set 25-21.
The second set proved to be just as tightly contested as the first, with the teams trading the lead multiple times and remaining within a few points of each other throughout. The Pacers, however, made the final push at the end of the set, capped off by a kill from
Peri Sheerin to take the second 25-20.
The Cougars raised their game in the third as the Pacer's struggled to retain their form, taking the set by a score of 25-10. Marywood was able to recover quickly in the fourth, taking the set and the match with an equally decisive score of 25-15, once again capped off by a kill from Sheerin.
Gabriella Santos lead the Pacers offensive efforts with 14 kills and 3 service aces. Fresh off of her entrance into the 1,000 digs club,
Jordan Vossler added 18 more against the Cougars. Freshman
Sara Burgos contributed a game high 32 assists.
In the final match of the evening, the Pacers earned a decisive victory over the Wildcats in straight sets by scores of 25-12, 25-15, 25-15.
In the contest that saw the Pacers spend most of their time on the offensive, Santos posted another solid performance by earning her second double digit figure of the night with 10 kills as well as 3 blocks.
Mikayla Attwood had a game high of 4 blocks and freshman
Emily Haberman contributed 20 assists.
The Pacers will open conference play next Tuesday when they travel to Aston, Pa. to take on Neumann University.
