Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pacers Hold Off Marymount; Remain Unbeaten in Atlantic East

Arlington, Va. - Marywood University's men's basketball team held off a late rally from host Marymount University (Va.) Saturday afternoon to secure a 70-66 Atlantic East Conference win.  The Pacers remain perfect in league play (3-0) while improving to 11-5 on the year.  The Saints fell to 7-9 (1-3) with the loss.

Marywood got a game-high 23 points from Thomas Swartz in winning their eighth game in their last ten.  Jeremy Ringland and Tone Cockrell each had 12 for the Pacers.  Swartz completed his second double-double of the week with 11 boards. He had career- and game-highs of 34 points and 15 boards in the Pacers' road win over Cabrini Tuesday, giving him 57 points and 26 rebounds on the week.

Marywood trailed by seven (32-27) after a rough first half.  The Pacers shot just 23.1% (6 of 26) from the floor in the opening stanza and 2 of 13 (15.4%) from beyond the arc.  Marymount, meanwhile, was 40% from the floor but also shot poorly from long range (3 of 14).

After the Saints extended their lead to six (33-27) on the front end of a pair of free throws, Marywood began cutting into the host's lead.  Jaden Rhoden scored five straight points on two layups and a free throw to cut the deficit to one (33-32), and a Ringland jumper with 13:35 gave the Pacers their first lead (36-35) of the game.

With the game knotted at 38-38, Swartz hit a three at the 12:28 mark to give Marywood a cushion.  The score would remain tight for a while, but the Pacers never relinquished that lead.  Up one (49-48), Swartz nailed a trey and Ringland followed with a layup to extend Marywood's lead to six with 8:10 remaining.

Marymount got back to within two (54-52) but Swartz hit another three at the 6:03 mark to put Marywood back up five, and another three from the senior captain with just under five minutes remaining put Marywood up seven, 61-54.

The Pacers used a traditional three-point play from Ringland to go up eight (64-56) with 3:13 to go, and a pair of free throws from Tone Cockrell with 2:03 to play gave Marywood a 10-point 66-56 cushion and capped a 14-4 run for Marywood over a 4:14 span.

Despite allowing a 9-0 run from the Saints in less than a minute's time that cut the Marywood lead to three (66-63), a pair of free throws from Swartz and one from Cockrell sealed the Pacers' win.

Marywood increased their offensive output to 50% (12 of 24) from the floor in the second half and more importantly hit nearly 74% (17 of 23) of their free throws in the second half.

The Pacers host Neumann University (9-7, 0-3 Atlantic East) Wednesday at 8:00 pm.
