Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Moves into First Place with 84-69 Win over Gwynedd

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University topped Gwynedd Mercy University 84-69 Wednesday evening at the Insalaco Arena to move into a first-place tie with the Griffins in the Atlantic East Conference men's basketball standings.

Both teams now have identical records at 13-6 overall and 5-1 in league play.  Marywood now holds a tiebreaker over the Griffins via the 15-point victory.
Jaden Rhoden led Marywood with a second-straight double-double effort, going for 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Thomas Swartz added a team-high 18 points as five Pacers in all reached double digits.

Jack DeGroot added 12 for Marywood, and Tone Cockrell and Donovan Catchings both had 11.  Gwynedd Mercy was led by Rich Dunham's game-high 20, but only two other Griffins reached double digits in the loss.

For the second game in a row, Marywood entered halftime in a tight game.  Against Immaculata Saturday, the Pacers' first conference loss of the season, they were tied 30-30 before the Mighty Macs ran away with the second half.  This time, fortune flipped for the Pacers, and after leading by one (29-28) at the break, it was Marywood who took control in the second.

Marywood out-scored GMU 55-41 in the second, handing the visitors their first league loss of the year.

The Pacers methodically took apart the Griffins in the second half, exploding offensively while using high pressure defense to force turnovers and bad shots.  Marywood hit over 53% from the field in the second and over 90% from the free throw line, while limiting the Griffins to 33.3% shooting from long range.  GMU was just 5 of 10 from the charity stripe in the second.

With the Pacers leading 43-40, Marywood limited the Griffins to one point over the next four minutes as they went on a 11-1 run.  After the visitors hit a layup at the 9:30 mark, Marywood forced two turnovers and turned that into a 5-0 run highlighted by a Cockrell's three from in front of the home bench.

Soon, Marywood was up by as many as 19, and the Pacers threw down two monsterous dunks in the final minutes, the first from Ringland and the second an alley-oop from Ringland to Rhoden worthy of Sports Center Top-10 highlights.

Marywood is back in action next Wednesday at home against Cabrini. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm in the Insalaco Arena.
