Women's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker to Griffins at Home

Scranton, Pa. – Five players in double figures was not enough for Marywood University in an 85-81 loss to Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday in Atlantic East Conference women's basketball action. The Griffins came back from a nine-point second half deficit to down the Pacers.

Kilie Wyers had a career-high 16 points for the Pacers. Wyers made four 3-pointers and contributed five assists.

Natasha Hessling tallied her 11th double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out with four minutes remaining. Morgan Shamro hit four 3-pointers in the first half for 12 points. Cait Reilly finished with 13 points.

Alyssa Olson matched a single-game school assists record with nine helpers. She was one short of a double-double with 12 points. It is the fourth time a Pacers player to reach nine assists, matching Gab Giordano (2019) and Alexa Gerchman (2015, 2016).

The Griffins received a game-high 24 points from Olivia Roseman, who came two rebounds shy of a double-double. Sydney Thompson tallied 21 points, and Chyanne Fine provided a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Marywood shot 50 percent for the game and made 52.2 percent of its 3-point attempts. The Pacers were 11 of 14 from the line for 78.6 percent. The Griffins shot 42.9 percent and matched the Pacers in 3-pointers despite throwing up eight more. Gwynedd Mercy was 68.4 percent from the charity stripe.

Gwynedd Mercy out-rebounded the Pacers by a 40-32 margin.

The Griffins jumped out of the game, tallying a double-digit lead when Olivia Roseman hit a 3-pointer with 1:47 left to go ahead 26-16. Marywood shrunk the deficit to five in the final 90 seconds of the quarter.

Marywood outscored the Griffins 10-2 to start the second quarter, tying the game at 31-31 on a pair of Wyers free throws. Roseman hit a 3-pointer on the next possession to regain the Pacers' advantage, and a Jill Kane jumper in the paint sent the visitors to halftime with a 39-35 lead.

The Pacers went on an 11-point run in the third quarter to reclaim the lead. Wyers hit Hessling in the paint on an inbounds pass for the Pacers' first lead (46-45) of the game at the midway point of the third. Marywood had a 19-2 swing that ended with Marissa Fernandez Tierney's 3-pointer that supplied the Pacers with a 56-47 lead at the 2:05 point of the stanza. Gwynedd Mercy trimmed it a one possession game, but Shamro connected on a long-range shot to extend the Pacers' advantage to 61-55 at the final intermission.

Gwynedd Mercy outscored Marywood 30-20 in the fourth quarter.

Marywood faces Penn College of Technology on Sunday in a non-conference matchup.
