Women's Soccer Secures Third Straight Shutout, Downs Gwynedd Mercy 4-0

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University's women's soccer team picked up their third consecutive shutout win as the Pacers defeated Gwynedd Mercy University 4-0 in Atlantic East Conference action on a rain-soaked Wednesday afternoon.

The Pacers improved to 5-6 overall and 2-0 in the league while GMU slipped to 3-11-2 and 0-3 AEC.  Marywood out-shot the visitors 28-7, including a 19-2 clip in the second half.

Bella DiToma made four saves to complete her second straight clean sheet in league play.

After a slow and sloppy start due to heavy rain, Desi Rill took advantage of a poor clearance attempt, collected the ball on the top of the 18 and put it past Griffins' net-minder Daniella Repkoe for a 1-0 Marywood lead.  The Pacers would carry that lead into intermission.

Just 54-ticks into the second, Jackie VonItter raced down the left flank and put in a low cross that Cara Romaniello one-timed home for her second tally of the season.

In the 71st minute, Romaniello bagged her third goal of the year, this time finishing her own saved shot.  Becca Dolgas' cross made it to the center of the box where it deflected off of VonItter and into the path of Romaniello. The junior's original touch bounced off Repkoe but behind the keeper where it was put home by Romaniello into an empty net.

Marywood's Elizabeth Levine seemed to put the Pacers up 4-0 moments later on a one-time finish after a Kayla Schmadtke cross was punched away, but the freshman was ruled offside by the assistant referee and the goal was nullified.

With less than three minutes to play, Madison Daches made the most of the Pacers' final corner kick as she bent in a ball from the left corner to the far post to collect Marywood's final goal.

Marywood will look to remain atop the AEC standings when they travel to Marymount University (Va.) Saturday. The Pacers and Saints will kick off at 4:00 pm at Long Bridge Park Field #1 in Arlington, Va.
