Volleyball Upsets Scranton, Takes Down Gwynedd Mercy to Lock Playoff Berth

Jordan Vossler breaks the career digs record

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University secured a spot in the Atlantic East Conference volleyball playoffs with a 3-1 victory over Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday afternoon. The Pacers also spit a tri-match Friday with a victory over the University of Scranton (3-1) and a loss to DeSales University (3-0).

Jordan Vossler broke the school record for career digs in the loss to the Bulldogs. Vossler surpassed Rachel Tollett '14 atop the career leaders and stands at 1,940 total digs.

With one conference game remaining on its schedule, Marywood (11-18, 2-3) stands in fourth place in the Atlantic East playoffs.

Marywood 3, Gwynedd Mercy 1

The Pacers defeated the Griffins by scores of 25-20, 25-14, 18-25, 25-19.

Vossler recorded 36 saves for the second-most in program history for a four-set match. She was only of four players in double figures, defensively. Sam Compton finished with 16 digs.

Sara Burgos matched a career high with 48 assists, adding 10 digs for a double-double. Nicole Cashman also provided a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs.

Peri Sheerin notched the second-most kills during her career. Sheerin finished with 20 kills and a .333 attack percentage. Ashley King scored 11 kills with just two errors for a .346 hitting percentage.

Marywood broke out of a first set tie at 13-13 lead to hold tight to a 17-15 advantage. The Pacers went on a four-point run with back-to-back kills from King to take a 21-15 lead.

In the fourth set, the Pacers escaped a 5-5 tie with six straight points off of Cashman serves. During the run, Sheerin recorded four kills.

Gwynedd Mercy's Cait Saalfrank had 30 digs, and Bridge Mctamney posted 25 assists. Liz Schule recorded seven aces.

Marywood shot .236 for the match to the Griffins' .057 mark.

Marywood 3, Scranton 1

Marywood upended the host Royals by scores of 25-19, 25-23, 10-25, 25-22.

The Pacers were led by Sheerin's nine kills and three aces. King matched her with nine kills and a .368 attack percentage. Mikayla Attwood blocked seven shots (five assists, two solo).

Compton totaled 11 digs and eight kills, and Cashman tallied eight kills and eight digs. Vossler had four aces and 16 digs.

In the first set, Marywood took a 16-15 lead on a Cashman kill from Burgos. The Pacers' lead grew to no more than three before closing out the opening victory on a four-point run via Vossler serves.

Marywood trailed by as much as 11-5 in the second set before making a comeback effort. King kicked off the rally with a kill from a Compton assist. After inching back, Vossler evened the score at 15-15 on an ace and Cashman's kill provided the first lead. Scranton reclaimed the lead (23-22). Following a service error to tie the game at 23, Marywood finished the match with a Compton-Attwood block and Sheerin ace.

Scranton cruised to take nine of the first 10 points and closed on a nine-point run en route to a third-set victory.

The Royals had hopes of forcing a fifth set with a 17-15 advantage. On King's serves, the Pacers put together a five-point swing, thanks to back-to-back-to-back Sheerin kills that claimed the lead. With a 23-22 lead, Cashman earned a kill, and Compton and King recorded match point with a block.

The victory ended an eight-match slide to the Royals, and it was just the Pacers' second win in the past 15 matchups. It was Marywood's first win over Scranton since 2010.

DeSales 3, Marywood 0

The Bulldogs ousted Marywood by scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-13.

Vossler broke the school career digs record as part of a 22-dig effort. Brenna Kelley had eight digs.

Cashman was the leading Pacers' hitter with eight kills. Burgos had 11 assists.

DeSales was led by Grace Merritt's 11 kills and Audrey Wolfe added 34 assists.

Marywood will travel to Keystone College on Halloween.
