Women's Soccer Knocks Off Wesley on Senior Day

Scranton, Pa. - Cara Romaniello scored with 7:01 to play to lift Marywood University to a thrilling 1-0 win over Wesley College in Atlantic East women's soccer action. The Pacers improved to 7-7 (4-1 AEC) with the win while the Wolverines slipped to 9-7 (4-1). Both teams sit tied atop the AEC standings with one regular season game remaining.

Romaniello's heroics came off a tap-in after a scramble in front of the net where Wesley netminder Kiyanna Gill was forced to push the ball away on a sprawling save.  Romaniello found herself in the right place at the right time to put away her fifth goal of the year and her second game-winner.  The play began with a direct kick from Brooke Longstreet at the midfield line.  Longstreet's long ball defelected off a defender's head and was vollied by Madison Daches towards goal, forcing Gill to make a diving stop to her left. Her touch found the foot of Romaniello, whose initial shot rang off the right post but came right back to her to put home.

The Pacers had plenty of chances throughout, dominating the Wolverines on the stat sheet.  Marywood  had 21 shots to seven for Wesley, but the shots on goal margin was much slimmer at 9-5.  Marywood missed a penatly kick in the first half after a foul in the box and several other dangerous looks were called back due to offsides.

Bella DiToma made five saves for the shutout win.  Gill had seven stops and a defender was credited with one as well for clearing a ball off the line.

Prior to and after the game, Marywood honored seniors Desi Rill, Jackie VonItter, Carissa Novelli, Shea Olszewski, Natalia Colasurdo, Becca Dolgas and Kayla Schmadtke.

Marywood travels to Immaculata Wednesday for a 4:00 pm kickoff against the Mighty Macs. A win will secure Marywood the number one seed in the Atlantic East postseason tournament.
