Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Road Shutout Secures Top Seed for Women's Soccer

Immaculata, Pa. - Carissa Novelli scored two goals around a Brooke Longstreet penalty kick goal as Marywood University's women's soccer team locked up the top seed in the Atlantic East Conference post season with a 3-0 win road win at Immaculata University.

The Pacers (8-7, 5-1) earned all of their league wins via shutout.  Bella DiToma made five saves, including one in the final 10 seconds off a corner kick, to earn the clean sheet.

The win lifted Marywood to an even league record with Wesley College (10-7), but the Pacers downed the Wolverines 1-0 last week and will take the #1 seed into the post-season via their head-to-head win. Both teams will have a bye for Saturday's first round action and host a semifinal Wednesday.

After a scoreless first half in which each team took six shots, Marywood turned up the offensive pressure immediately after the second half whistle, but strong goalkeeper play from Mighty Mac tender Brooke Shissler kept the Pacers off the board.

With just under 19 minutes left in regulation, Novelli took advantage of a defender turning the ball central on top of the 18, took two touches and slotted home what would be the game-winner.

Moments later, Cara Romaniello was fouled in the box and Longstreet put home the penalty kick to double the Pacers' lead.  Marywood was not through, as Natalia Colasurdo's cross from the left wing, which was "dumbied" by Shea Olszewski, found Novelli at the far post to make it 3-0 with 2:34 to play.

Marywood out-shot the Mighty Macs 12-3 in the second half, and 18-9 for the game.  Shissler made nine saves in a fine performance, including two great stops on Elizabeth Levine breakaway strikes.

Marywood will host the lowest remaining seed from Saturday's first round action Wednesday, November 6 at 4:00 pm.
