Women's Soccer Advances to Atlantic East Title Game

Scranton, Pa. - Freshman Madison Muller and senior Kayla Schmadtke each scored their first collegiate goals as top-seed Marywood University advanced to Saturday's Atlantic East title game with a 2-0 win over #4 Immaculata Wednesday afternoon.

The defending Champion Pacers (9-7) will host #3 Cabrini (14-3-2) Saturday at 4:00 pm following the field hockey championship game at 1:00 pm. Immaculata closes their season at 8-11-1. Cabrini downed #2 Wesley 2-0 in the other AEC semifinal Wednesday evening.

In a rematch of last year's inaugural AEC title game that the Pacers won 1-0, and in a repeat of last week's 3-0 win over the Mighty Macs, the Pacers struggled to put anything together offensively in the first half.  Marywood had several good looks that were called back due to offsides, and dodged a bullet when Immaculata hit a direct kick off the crossbar with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half and when Ashlyn Jess cleared a dangerous ball off the goal line following a Corinne Karas shot off a corner kick with 6:02 to play.

Muller's tally came in the final seconds of the opening stanza.  A late corner kick from Jackie VonItter was re-directed by Muller from the near post to the far netting, giving the Pacers a 1-0 lead heading into the break. Both teams had nine shots in the opening half with Marywood holding a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Each team missed numerous opportunities in the second half, including several dangerous looks from the visitors on set pieces.  Bella DiToma, who collected six saves for the shutout victory, came up big several times on those plus several close range looks for the Mighty Macs, including a breakaway stop.

Still up 1-0, Marywood needed another goal line clearance, this time from Molly Sobolewski, on a ball that beat DiToma and was heading towards goal for the equalizer.  A recovering Sobolewski made it back in time to clear the ball out of the goal mouth and out of danger.

Needing an insurance goal, Schmadtke took over.  The senior outside connected on a give-and-go with Becca Dolgas, broke through the Mighty' Mac's defensive line and rocketed a shot from just inside the 18 that beat Brooke Shissler to make it 2-0 with 10:02 to play.

The Mighty Macs out-shot Marywood 14-7 in the second half giving them a 23-16 advantage for the game, but the Pacers placed 10 on goal to IU's eight.  The Mighty Macs had a slight 4-3 advantage in corners.
