Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DeGroot Leads Pacers to First Win, Pacers Down Centenary 92-88

Hackettstown, N.J. - Jack DeGroot scored a game-high 27 points and led six Pacers in double figures as the Marywood University men's basketball team picked up their first win of the season in a tight 92-88 win over host Centenary University Tuesday evening in New Jersey.

Marywood (1-4) also got double-figure performances from Adam Boussatta, who had 15 points and Donovan Catchings, who had 14.  Three other Pacers - Tom DiFilippo, Joey Monaghan and Matt McKenna -  all added 11 points apiece. Besides Anthony DeGori's one-point game, no other Marywood players scored in the win.

Centenary's Chris Labelle nearly matched DeGroot, scoring a team-high 25 points in the loss.

Trailing by six (47-41) at halftime, the Pacers turned things around in the second stanza.  After shooting 40.5% from the floor in the opening half and going 0-of-5 from three-point range, Marywood hit nearly 52% of their shots in the second half and went 5-of-9 from beyond the arc to complete the comeback win.

Marywood would allow the opening point of the second half and trailed by as many as 11 (58-47) with 15 minutes remaining. The Pacers used back-to-back three's from DeGroot and DiFilippo to cut their deficit to five.  Centenary would briefly go back up by eight, but a quick 6-0 run capped by a Boussatta lay-in cut the visitor's deficit to two (61-59) with 12:45 to go.

The Cyclones quickly responded with a 6-0 run to go back up by eight, and held off Marywood by as many as five (73-68) with just over seven minutes remaining.

A pair of DeGroot free throws got Marywood to within two, DeFilippo hit a three with 5:20 left to give the Pacers their first lead of the second half as Marywood went ahead, 76-75.

Despite two ties down the stretch, the Pacers would not relinquish the lead again.  Marywood went 5-of-7 from the charity stripe in the final 1:16 to hold off the Cyclones

On the defensive end, the Pacers allowed 48% shooting from the Cyclones in the opening half then limited them to a 40% clip in the second.  Centenary was held to 32.5% shooting from beyond the arc, hitting four three's in each half.

Despite being outscored on the bench 25-11, Marywood scored a season high 50 points in the paint.  The Pacers held a commanding 51-36 lead in rebounds, grabbing 19 offensive rebounds for 22 second-chance points.

Marywood will host the inaugural Holiday Inn Express Electric City Classic this weekend.  Marywood will take on SUNY Old Westbury on Friday at 6:00 pm while John Jay College and Stevenson University will meet in the nightcap at 8:00 pm.
