ELECTRIC FINISH: DeGroot, Pacers Down Old Westbury in OT

Scranton, Pa. - Jack DeGroot hit a turn-around three pointer with two seconds remaining to force overtime and a jumper with ten seconds left in overtime to lift Marywood University men's basketball to a thrilling 90-88 win over SUNY Old Westbury in the opening round of the Holiday Inn Express Electric City Classic Friday evening at the Insalaco Arena.

Adam Boussatta sealed the win for the Pacers by sinking two free throws with one second remaining in OT after he was fouled rebounding a final shot by the Panthers.  Marywood improved to 2-4 on the year while Old Westbury fell to 0-3.

DeGroot led Marywood with a game-high 27 points.  He was 10 of 19 from the field, including three of five from long range, and went 4-for-5 from the charity stripe. Boussatta finished with 18 and went 6-of-7 from the line.  Donovan Catchings had the lone double-double for the Pacers, scoring 14 and grabbing 10 boards.

The Panthers got 19 points apiece from Pedro Marquez and Justine Alleyne-Washington and 16 points from both Cameron Winston and Jonathan Jamieson in the loss.  Alleyne-Washington grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, including 10 on the defensive end, to finish with a double-double.

After leading for much of the first half, Marywood let their lead slip away in the second.  The Pacers jumped out to an 11-4 lead and were eventually up 24-9 following Jake Curnow's lay-in with just over seven minutes remaining in the opening half.  Marywood maintained a double-digit lead until the Panthers started a comeback with under four minutes remaining in the opening half.

Catchings would hit a three-pointer with 30 seconds remaining in the first half before SUNY Old Westbury's Marquez hit two freebies to cut the Panters' deficit to four (38-34) at the break.

Marywood's lead would remain in the single digits until Old Westbury's Charles Wingate tied the game at 70-70 with 4:26 remaining in regulation.  A pair of free throws from Alleyne-Washington with 1:22 to go would give the Panther's their first lead of the game (76-75), and a steal from Marquez and finish from Alleyne-Washington gave the visitors a three-point (78-75 lead) with 53 seconds left.

DeGroot sank a pair of free throws to get Marywood to within one, but Marquez matched him at the charity stripe at the other end of the court with 10 seconds on the clock.  The Pacers raced down the court and found DeGroot, who spun around a defender and hit a running three to tie the game and force overtime.

The Panters opened OT with a three pointer and were up by five (86-81) a minute into the extra frame. Zack Tinkham's jumper in the late got the Pacers to within one (86-85) with 2:55 to go.  After Alleyne-Washington gave the Panther's a three-point cushion again, DeGroot's fast-break lay-in cut the deficit to one for the Pacers.  DeGroot put the Pacers up 89-88 with 10 seconds left, and the Pacers' defense recovered quickly to stop a Panthers' fast-break attempt to win the game.  The missed shot was rebounded by Boussatta, who nailed the freebies at the other end to complete the 91-88 win.

Marywood will play John Jay College Saturday at 4:00 pm. The Bloodhounds defeated Stevenson 73-63 in the nightcap. Stevenson will take on Old Westbury in the consolation game at 2:00 pm in the Insalaco Arena.
