Field Hockey Reaches First Conference Final in 21 Years

Kenzie Drew knocks in game-winning goal in first minute of overtime

Scranton, Pa. - Top-seeded Marywood University reached its first field hockey conference championship game in 21 seasons Wednesday with a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 4 Cabrini University. The Pacers tied a school record with its 15th victory of the season.

Kenzie Drew scored the game-winning goal 54 seconds into the first 7-on-7 overtime period. Sara Sterchak crushed a penalty corner shot that ricocheted off of the corner of the cage. Lindsey Quinn dished the ball to the far corner for Drew to slam into the cage.

Marywood will host No. 2 Wesley College Saturday at 1:00 pm in the Atlantic East championship. The women's soccer team will host No. 3 Cabrini University in the early nightcap.

Quinn finished with a goal and an assist. Although she was not credited with an assist on the game-winning, Sterchak recorded a pair of defensive saves.

Marywood (15-3) notches its third consecutive win over Cabrini after previously suffering 22 consecutive losses that stretched from October 10, 2000.

The Pacers reach their first conference championship game since 1998. Marywood won the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (now Colonial States Athletic Conference). The Pacers also won in 1992 and 1993, and were runner-ups for three straight years in the mid-90s.

Quinn provided Marywood with an early second quarter lead. In the 23rd minute, Quinn one-timed a reverse Jenna Dickey feed into the circle for a 1-0 advantage.

The Cavaliers added an equalizer in the 43rd minute. Gabby Thompson tapped in a cross from Lauren Vanstone at the far side of the box.

Sterchak kept out an Olivia Sims shot in the 33rd minute on a bang-bang play. Eight minutes later, she sent away another Sims attempt to keep Cabrini off of the scoreboard.

Kerri Mountz had one save to earn the win. Noelia Ramirez recorded seven saves for the Cavaliers.
