DeGroot's Career-High 32 Points Sink Misericordia, 89-79

Donovan Catchings comes an assist shy of tying single-game record

Scranton, Pa. - Junior guard Jack DeGroot netted a career-high 32 points to help Marywood University men's basketball upend Misericordia 89-79 on Saturday. The Pacers record their first win over the Cougars since 2010, ending a three-game slide versus the former Pennsylvania Athletic Conference rivals.

DeGroot went 10 of 17 from the field with four 3-pointers and seven rebounds. He has scored 27-plus points in four of the Pacers' 10 games this season.

The Cougars climbed back from an early double digit lead with a 12-2 run out of the halftime break. Marywood (4-6) took the lead for good with a Matt McKenna 3-pointer from Jake Curnow at the 11:03 mark. McKenna's long-ranged shot initiated an eight-point run that the Pacers never relinquished.

Marywood held on to its lead in the last 10 minutes of regulation. Leading by just two (71-69), Zach Tinkham found an open Adam Boussatta in the paint for an old-fashioned three-point play. Boussatta followed with a clutch jumper on the next possession to increase the lead to 76-69 with 7:02 remaining.

Misericordia crawled back to a two-possession game in the last two minutes. Catching found Tom DeFilippo in the corner for a fast-break 3-pointer that sealed the victory with 1:08 left before the final horn.

Boussatta finished with 17 points. DeFilippo posted 11 points and eight rebounds, and Jason Holman matched him with 11 for his first double-digit production.

Misericordia was led by Noah Rivera with 28 points and 14 rebounds. Tony Harding and Nate Kreitzer each tallied 15 points.

For the game, Marywood shot 11 of 21 from beyond the arc for 52.4 percent. After a lights-out start to the game, the Pacers made half of their field goal attempts. Free throws turned out to be a deciding factor. Marywood made 78.3 percent of its shots from the charity stripe, led by DeGroot's 8 for 10 outing. Misericordia went cold at the line in the second half, making just 47.06 percent of its 17 attempts.

Both teams combined for just 20 turnovers.

Marywood will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 14 to take on Elizabethtown College at 3 p.m.
