Women's Basketball Secures No. 3 Seed with Win over Macs

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University clinched the No. 3 seed in the Atlantic East Conference women's basketball playoffs with a 63-52 victory over Immaculata University on Wednesday. The win over the Mighty Macs ensures a first round home playoff game against Gwynedd Mercy University on Presidents Day.
 
The Pacers broke open a tie game with 10 straight points to open up the fourth quarter. Marywood trailed for the majority of the first three quarters before outscoring the Mighty Macs 22-11 in the last stanza.
 
Aryah Aungst led the Pacers with 16 points. She went 7 of 8 from the free throw line and scored eight points in the fourth quarter.
 
Natasha Hessling ended her run of eight straight double-doubles and 13 consecutive games with 10-plus rebounds. She finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
 
Marissa Fernandez Tierney had eight points and three steals.
 
The Pacers shot 37.7 percent from the field and made 21 of 27 free throw attempts at a 77.8 percent clip. The Mighty Macs shot 39.6 percent and connected for three-fourths of their 12 attempts. Marywood made the best of 20 Immaculata turnovers by outscoring the visitors 22-10 in points off of turnovers.
 
With the game tied 28-28 at halftime, Immaculata stormed out of the gates with a nine-point run that gave the Macs their largest lead (36-30) of the game with 8:07 remaining in the third.  Kilie Wyers drove into the lane and made an and-1 to take a 41-39 lead with 35 left in the quarter. Immac's Theresa Kearney made a pair of free throws to even the score at 41 apiece.
 
Aungst kicked off the fourth by hitting a runner at the top of the key from Fernandez Tierney that gave the Pacers their last lead change. Emily Theobald capped off the scoring run with a jump shot with 5:52 remaining to take a 51-41 advantage. Immaculata followed with six straight, cutting the deficit to four on a Kearney layup at the 3:29 mark. After Amber Ballinger erased three Pacers free throws, Aryah Aungst came through with a jumper with 77 seconds that stuck the dagger into the Macs' upset chances. Marywood made all seven free throws in the final minute to ensure the No. 3 seed.
 
Kearney finished with 14 points.
 
Marywood closes the regular season on the road against Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday. The Pacers and Griffins will face off twice in a matter of three days.
