Second Half Rally Stuns Marywood in Atlantic East Semifinal

Scranton, Pa. - Visiting three-seed Marymount University (Va.) used a stellar second half to take down #2 Marywood University 71-64 in the Atlantic East Conference semifinals Thursday evening in Scranton.

Marywood (16-10) now awaits a possible bid to the ECAC tournament while Marymount (16-11) will travel to top-seed Gwynedd Mercy University Saturday afternoon for the inaugural league men's basketball crown.

Playing without one of their best players as Thomas Swartz missed tonight's game with an injury, the Pacers could not have put together a more perfect team effort in the first half.  Five players had seven points in the opening half while a sixth added six as the Pacers built a 41-34 lead at the break.

In the first half alone, the score was tied eight times and the lead changed hands 11 times.  A Tone Cockrell three-pointer gave Marywood a 25-24 lead with 6:59 to go in the opening half and the Pacers held that lead going in to the second half.

Marywood's Jeremy Ringland would open the second with a three to give the Pacers a 10-point, 44-34 lead, and another three from Jack DeGroot moments later put Marywood up 11.  The Pacers would hover around a double-digit lead over the next two minutes and held a 51-40 lead with 14:29 to go.

From there, the Saints would slowly chip away at the Pacers' lead.  Down nine (56-47) with 10:43 to go, a 5-0 run over a 3:30 span got the visitors to within four (56-52) with just over seven minutes to go.

Later, down three (61-58) with 4:14 to go, Marymount would keep the Pacers off the board over the next 3:35 as they used a 9-0 run to take control.  The Saints led 67-61 with 37 seconds left after that run, and would seal the win by hitting four straight from the charity stripe over the final 30 seconds.

Xavier Reaves led all scorers with a game-high 21 points for the Knights.  He went 8-of-13 from the field including three of four from long range.  He also grabbed seven boards in the win.  Marywood was led by Jeremy Ringland's 16 points on 7 of 18 shooting.  Jaden Rhoden had a game-high 11 boards for the Pacers.  Jack DeGroot (14) and Zach Tinkham (12) also reached double-digits.

Marymount limited Marywood to 28.6% shooting (8 of 28) from the floor and 20% (3 of 15) from three point range in the second half.

ECAC announcements are expected mid-to-late Monday afternoon.
