Gleason's Seven Goals Cement Brown's Coaching Debut Victory

Farmingdale, N.Y. – Marywood University provided Kerrie Brown a victory in her coaching debut with an 11-6 victory over Farmingdale State Saturday in the women's lacrosse season opener. The Pacers broke open a one-goal lead with five unanswered over a 15-minute span in the second half.

Gwyneth Gleason set a career-high with seven goals and six caused turnovers. Gleason also picked up four ground balls and made half of her six free position shots.

Gina Babcock was the only other Pacers player with multiple goals. Babcock finished with two goals and three ground balls.

In net, Mary Leahy made seven stops to notch her 13th career victory.

Marywood received four caused turnovers, three ground balls and a goal from Zoe Simeone. Molly Yelencsics added a goal and three draw controls.

Ashley King produced her first career point with the Pacers' lone assist.

The Pacers kept the Rams out of the net for the first 22 minutes of regulation, building a 3-0 lead. Gleason opened the season with a goal just over seven minutes into the game. Babcock followed suit with her first with 12 minutes left in the half. Ninety-six seconds later, Gleason increased the lead to three.

Farmingdale State showed momentum in the latter third of the half. Courtney Gendels' second tally trimmed the Pacers' lead to 4-3 with 2:41 remaining. Babcock tacked on her second netter with 37 seconds remaining to head into the break with a 5-3 advantage.

The Rams kept the Pacers on the roads in the first three minutes of the second half; Sam Shelton's goal from Gendels reeled Marywood's lead back to one (6-5).

Gleason responded in kind with three unanswered goals in under four minutes. Following Simeone's first of the season, Gleason capped off the scoring barrage with an unassisted goal at 11:07 to take an 11-5 lead.

Gendels had two goals and three assists for the Rams. Melanie Tencic had three caused turnovers.

Marywood nearly doubled the Rams in both shots (30-16) and ground balls (23-12). Farmingdale State had an 11-7 advantage in draw controls. The Rams received just one FPS attempt and committed 27 turnovers.

The Pacers face a quick turnaround and welcome King's College Monday at 5:00 pm.
