Pacers Rally from 16-Point Setback for Late Winner over Knights

Aston, Pa. – Sophomore Cara Romaniello made a game-winning free throw with 24 seconds remaining to propel Marywood University to a 70-69 victory over Neumann University on Wednesday. The Pacers (10-12, 5-4) position themselves solely into third place in the Atlantic East Conference women's basketball standings.

Marywood came back from a 16-point deficit at the end of the first half. The lead changed hands just once; the Pacers led for just 3:07.

Aryah Aungst matched a game-high with 18 points. Aungst made 8 of 15 shots from the field for her second-straight game in double figures since coming back to the lineup.

Natasha Hessling continued her run of eight consecutive double-doubles with her 15th of the season. Hessling provided 18 points and 12 rebounds. She currently stands with the third-most rebounds in a single season, just three short of a school record of 319 held by Maria Rossi (1988-89) and Traci Reidler (1989-90).

Emily Theobald finished with 12 points, and Alyssa Olson posted 11 points.

A 10-point run leapfrogged the Pacers midway through the fourth quarter after trailing for 35 minutes. Alyssa Olson made a layup to even the score at 65-65 with 3:30 remaining in the game. On the next possession, Hessling made a layup give the Pacers their first lead. Hessling capped off the run with a layup to take a 69-65 advantage with 2:44 on the scoreboard.

Neumann charged back with layups by Maia Bryson and Jaylin Ortiz to tie the game at 69-69 with 25 seconds in regulation. Ortiz missed a free throw for a potential go-ahead point, and Romaniello was fouled on the defensive rebound.

After missing her first attempt, Romaniello made the second shot for what proved to be the winning point. Bryson missed a 3-pointer, and Hessling secured the defensive rebound with three seconds left.

The Pacers shot 49.2 percent from the field, holding Neumann to 40.3 percent. Marywood outrebounded the Knights by a 38-34 margin.

Marywood opened the second half on a 10-2 to cut the 12-point halftime deficit to four.

Nafisa Saunders, the No. 2 scorer in Division III, led the Knights with 31 points. Dunmore native Mariah Maciejewski finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Maia Bryson had 11 points.

The Pacers welcome Marymount University to the Insalaco Arena on Saturday.
