Women's Basketball Threatens Second-Place Saints, Fall Short in Fourth Quarter

Scranton, Pa. – Senior forward Natasha Hessling broke the Marywood University single-season rebounding record in a 67-54 loss to Marymount University on Saturday. The Pacers (10-13, 5-5) remain in third place in the Atlantic East women's basketball standings with a tiebreaker over Neumann University.

Entering the game four rebounds shy of the 30-year old record, Hessling matched her season average with 14 rebounds. She added 17 points for her eighth consecutive and 16th overall double-double of the season.

Hessling broke the record with 13 seconds remaining in the first half. She snaps a record of 319 set by a Maria Rossi (1988-90) and Tracie Rieder (1990-91). Hessling now has an Atlantic East-best 329 rebounds this season.

Aryah Aungst reached double figures for the fifth consecutive game – three since returning from illness – with a 14-point performance against the Saints. Aungst added five assists.

Coach Gabby Holko celebrated the careers of two senior captains – Hessling and Alyssa Olson – prior to the game. Olson finished with eight points and eight assists.

Trailing by as many as 18 in the first half, Marywood cut its deficit to seven in the fourth quarter. A free throw by Marissa Fernandez Tierney cut the Saints' lead to 59-52 with 8:25 remaining. From there, both teams traded a combined 13 possessions without scoring a point until Tiffani McQueen made a jumper with 4:24 left for Marymount. The Saints kept Marywood scoreless for an eight-minute stretch until Aungst made a jumper with 12 seconds until the final buzzer.

Marymount was led by a double-double by Katie McShea (21 points-10 rebounds). Regan Lohr finished with 25 points, and Gabriella Hadded had 10 boards.

The Saints shot 39.6 percent to the Pacers' 34 percent mark. Marymount dominated 28-14 in the paint. The Pacers were edged 37-34 in rebounds despite the size differential.

Marywood hosts Immaculata University on Wednesday night at 6 pm.
