Pacers Take Down Knights for 12-7 Victory

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University returned to the win column with a 12-7 victory over Arcadia University Saturday in non-conference women's lacrosse. It is the Pacers' second consecutive victory over the Knights after dropping their first four meetings.

Gwyneth Gleason led the Pacers with four goals. She also contributed team-highs of six ground balls, five draw controls and three caused turnovers.

Defensively, Mary Leahy was phenomenal in net with 12 saves. Melanie Wittick had five ground balls, two caused turnovers and four draw controls.

Molly Yelencsics scored two goals and an assist. Ashley King matched her with three points with a goal and two assists.

Zoe Simeone and Gina Babcock also factored in with two goals.

Babcock started the game with a woman-down goal at the 21:40 mark of the first half. Arcadia's Jess Kaye tallied a free position goal before the penalty expired to even the score.

Marywood (2-1) put together four unanswered goals in less than four minutes to take a 5-1 lead. Gleason added her first of the game on an unassisted opportunity at 18:45. Yelencsics found King on the run 32 seconds later for a 3-1 advantage. Following Yelencsics free-position goal, Gleason tacked on her second goal to cap the run at 15:27.

After Arcadia (0-4) scored eight minutes later, Babcock and Simeone wrapped up the first half to head into the break with a 7-2 advantage.

Scoring became more frequent in the first 10 minutes of the second half. A three-goal run by the Pacers extended their lead to 11-4 with 21:51. Brielle Peters found the net on a King pass at 22:45 for her first career goal.

The Knights responded with three consecutive goals of their own in a seven-minute span. Kaye cut the Pacers' lead down to 11-7 with 8:54 left.  

With Arcadia breathing down the Pacers' necks, Maeve MacKenna garnered a key ground ball pick up to provide her team with a much-needed possession. MacKenna outran a Knights' defender to the end line on a Nicole Kress wide left shot at 6:36. After a successful clear, Maddy Langlotz retained possession with a ground ball on a wide shot. Gleason capped the scoring with a goal with 4:42 remaining.

Marywood led the Knights in shots (33-26), ground balls (31-24), and draw controls (12-9).

Kaye finished with four goals for the Knights. Kristen Pedicone had four caused turnovers, and Caroline Toner picked up five ground balls.

The Pacers are slated to host Susquehanna University on Wednesday.
