Game Two Rally Falls Short; Scranton Sweeps Softball

Scranton, Pa. - The University of Scranton had 10 extra base hits in a 12-1 opening game win and held off a late Marywood rally in game two for an 8-7 win in extra innings to sweep the Pacers Wednesday afternoon in non-conference softball action.

Scranton (9-5) had eight doubles, a triple and homerun in the opening game as they cruised to a five-inning win. Marywood broke up the shutout thanks to a Jackie Burke RBI single in the third inning.

The Royals scored two unearned runs in the first and added five more in the second, the final two of which came on a Jessica Indelicato homer over the left field fence.

Scranton added two more in the fourth and three in the fifth to put the opener away early.

Kirstie Alvarez (2-3) suffered the loss.  Burke's hit was the only of the game for the Pacers as they were outhit 13-1.

The nightcap went to international tiebreaker rules in the eighth (agreed upon by coaches pre-game), where Scranton broke open a 4-4 tie with a four-run inning. Marywood (2-8) attempted to answer, scoring three times before running out of opportunities in the 8-7 loss.

Kaitlyn Epler went 4-for-5 at the plate and scored two runs in game two, while Sara Hayes and Sierra Mulgrew each had two hits for Marywood. Megan Zinn drove in two runs for Scranton while Meaghan Dowdell, who also earned the win on the mound in game one, also got the win in game two after coming on in relief for the final 1.2 innings.

The Pacers are slated to host Rosemont College in a doubleheader Friday beginning at 3:00 pm.
