Pacers Edge King's 11-10, Schuster Drives in Winning Run

Scranton, Pa. - Jake Schuster drove home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Marywood University held off King's College for a 11-10 non-conference victory.

The win snaps a four-game slide for the Pacers, who improved to 4-11 on the year. King's slipped to 6-10 with the loss.

Tied 10-10, pinch-hitter Michael Tempel opened the bottom of the ninth with a single to left.  After the Monarchs got two consecutive stikeouts, Trevor Powers moved Tempel to third with a single to right.

Schuster then stepped to the plate to provide the heroics, singling up the middle to bring Tempel across the plate.

Marywood built a 6-0 lead in the second inning, thanks to two RBI apiece from Kevin McDonough and Schuster, who tripled down the left field line to bring in the final two runs of the inning.

The Monarchs responded pair of runs in the third, but Marywood went back up six (8-2) in the fourth on another RBI from Schuster and one from Austin Takvor.

Things got interesting when King's scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth as Marywood held onto a slight 9-8 lead.  The Pacers would go up 10-8 on a Takvor sac RBI in the bottom of the eighth, but King's would still not go away.

The visitors would tie things up in the top of the ninth on a Matt Dobeck two-run double down the left field line before Schuster provided the winning run for Marywood in the bottom half of the ninth.

For the game, Schuster was 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBI, two walks and two runs scored.  Scott Becker was also 3-for-4 with a triple while Powers was 3-for-6 with a double. McDonough drove in three for Marywood as well.

Pasquale Mandarano, who pitched the final 2.1 innings for the Pacers, got the win, his first of the year (1-0).

Marywood returns to action Saturday with a conference twinbill at Marymount University.  Game one begins at 12:30 pm.
