Strong Start Evaporates in Pacers' Nightcap Loss to Colonels

Kirstie Alvarez clears bases with bases-loaded double

Edwardsville, Pa. – Marywood University was unable to hold on to an early lead in the nightcap of a doubleheader loss to Wilkes University Wednesday in non-conference softball action. The Pacers' offense struggled in a 5-0 opening shutout, and an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth was the difference-maker in a 7-6 loss in game two.

Kirstie Alvarez drove in three RBIs with a double in the second game. Cait Becher scored twice.

Marywood put up five runs in the third inning second game to take the lead. Kristie Epler had a bases-loaded single to drive in a run with no outs. After a fielder's choice yielded no run production, Alvarez cleared the bases with a double to right-center field. Annie Heyen hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the fifth run of the frame.

Starting pitcher Amanda Bridgwood was cruising through four innings with just one run allowed. The Colonels put up a five-spot of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning off of back-to-back home runs. A groundout to second place brought in a run to make it a 6-5 lead.

Marywood threatened in the top of the sixth. Consecutive one-out singles put runners in scoring position. A comebacker to the mound stranded pinchrunner Sara Sharp at third base. Hannah Docalovich singled down the right field line to bring in Becher to even the score at 6-6.

After an errant throw gave Wilkes the go-ahead run, Marywood threatened in its final at-bats. Heyen hit a two-out single to second base before the Colonels closed the door on the Pacers' rally.

Katie Siano took the loss despite not allowing an earned run in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Marywood managed just two hits in the opener.

Kelly McKenna retired all three batters faced in a relief appearance.

The Pacers (14-18) are back in the dugout Thursday. Marywood hosts Neumann University at noon in Atlantic East Conference action.
