Softball Sweeps Gwynedd Mercy in AEC Regular Season Finale

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – Marywood University picked up a pair of wins over Gwynedd Mercy University as the Pacers closed their Atlantic East Conference regular season slate with 4-1 and 19-9 wins over the Griffins Tuesday afternoon.

Marywood secured the No.4 seed in the Atlantic East Conference playoffs. The Pacers improved to 16-20 overall and 4-6 in league play. They will head to Pod A this weekend in Aston, Pa. The Pacers will take on No. 6 Gwynedd Mercy and No. 1 Neumann in a double-elimination tournament to reach the conference championship game the following weekend.

Marywood used a three-run fifth inning to take the lead in the opener. Kaitlyn Epler gave the Pacers a 1-0 lead with a RBI single to start things off.  A fielding error would then allow Hannah Docalovich to score, and Kirstie Alvarez then brought in Epler with a single through the left side to make it 3-0.

Gwynedd Mercy would get a run back in the bottom of the fifth, but Marywood tacked on their fourth when another Griffins' error allowed Epler to score again.

Alvarez struck out four on the mound to get her 10th win of the year. It was the senior hurler's 16th complete game of the season.

Epler and Alvarez were both 2-for-4 at the plate. Epler had Marywood's lone extra-base hit with a triple.

The Pacers used two big innings to put the nightcap away early. Marywood plated 11 runs in the second inning and seven in the fourth to help run-rule the Griffins.

Epler finished the nightcap 2-for-3 with two RBI. Sierra Mulgrew, Jackie Burke, Ally Latham, Docalovich and Lauryn Butler also had two RBI.  Burke, Docalovich and Butler all had doubles.

Katie Siano got the win on the mound, her fifth of the season.

Marywood will close out the regular season with a trip to nearby Clarks Summit University Wednesday for a 3:00 pm non-conference doubleheader.
