Softball Sweeps Clarks Summit to Close Regular Season

Clarks Summit, Pa. - Marywood University's softball team closed the regular season on a high note as the Pacers swept Clarks Summit University Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action. Marywood, winners of four straight, improved to 18-20 overall with 4-2 and 12-0 (5 inning) wins.

Clarks Summit dropped to 5-25 overall after the losses.

Marywood took a tight opener 4-2 after scoring a pair of runs over the opening two innings, then holding off the Defenders down the stretch.  Marywood out-hit the hosts 6-4 in the opener as Kirstie Alvarez went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.  Kate O'Meara also knocked in a run.

Amanda Bridgwood (2-1) got the win on the mound, striking out nine over a complete-game effort. She allowed just four hits and one earned run in the win.

The nightcap went much quicker for the Pacers, as they run-ruled the Defenders 12-0 in five innings.  Kelly McKenna earned her first win (1-2) of the year, allowing four hits in the shutout victory.

Kaitlyn Epler drove in five runs as part of a 3-for-4 game at the plate.  Annie Heyen, Sierra Mulgrew and Hannah Docalovich all had doubles.  Alvarez was 2-for-3 at the plate in the nightcap, giving her four hits on the day.  Heyen drove in two, while Sara Hayes was 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Docalovich finished game two 2-for-2 with the double, an RBI and two runs scored.

Marywood will travel to top-seed Neumann University for opening round playoff action Friday.  The Knights are the host of Pod 1, where #4 Marywood will take on #6 Gwynedd Mercy University before facing the #1 Knights later in the day.  This is double-elimination format, with the winner winner of Pod 1 taking on the winner of Pod 2 in a best of three series the following weekend for the inaugural Atlantic East Championship.
