UPSET | Yelencsics' Game-Winner Propels Pacers Past Cabrini

Marywood scores three unanswered goals in final eight minutes

Radnor, Pa. – The wait is over.

Marywood University defeated Cabrini University for the first time in seven years with a 15-14 victory Wednesday in Atlantic East Conference women's lacrosse action. The Pacers came back from a two-goal deficit with three unanswered goals in the last eight minutes.

Molly Yelencsics scored the game-winning goal with 2:28 remaining. Yelencsics went to the top-right corner on a free-position shot to give the Pacers (7-4, 2-0 Atlantic East) their third consecutive victory.

The Pacers successfully killed a woman-down opportunity from a green card issued in the last two minutes. Cabrini's Ashley Tutzauer hit the post with 68 seconds remaining, and Marywood freshman Brielle Peters picked up a ground ball to give Marywood possession and set up a game-ending successful clear.

It marks the Pacers' first win over the Cavaliers since a 16-5 victory on St. Patrick's Day in 2012. It ends a string of 10 consecutive losses to Cabrini that include four Colonial States Athletic Conference finals.

Zoe Simeone led the Pacers with a five-goal effort. Yelencsics scored all three of her goals on free position shots, going 3 of 7 from the 8 meters away.

Peters also finished with three points on two goals and an assist. Gina Babcock provided a pair of goals, and Gwyneth Gleason produced two goals, seven draw controls, three caused turnovers, and three ground balls.

On the defensive side of the field, Melanie Wittick caused four turnovers and controlled five draws.

Mary Leahy stopped nine shots for the victory.

Marywood came back from as much as a three-goal deficit. The Cavs' Shea Neary scored twice in 39 seconds to put Cabrini ahead 8-5 with 6:04 remaining in the first half. Yelencsics found the net with 4:56 to send the Pacers into halftime with an 8-6 deficit.

Simeone revived the Pacers with a pair of goals within 20 seconds to even the score. Cabrini quickly came back with a pair from Avery Murphy and Shea Neary within the next two minutes. Marywood responded in kind with a woman-up tally from Gleason and Kayla McCabe-from-Ashley King connection to square the game back up at 10-10 with 21:18 remaining.

The Pacers and Cavaliers traded two rounds of goals with Babcock and Peters tacking on points for the Pacers. A 12-on-10 scenario allowed Cabrini to twice score on Tutzauer woman-up goals for a 14-12 advantage with 8:49 left in the game.

Gleason won a pair of draw controls to enable a pair of Pacers' goals in a 62-second time frame. Yelencsics cut the deficit in half at the 8-minute mark, and Simeone connected on an FPS chance to tie the game at 14-14 with 6:58 on the scoreboard.

With the game tied, both teams traded possessions three times. A Cabrini turnover with 3:21 left gave the Pacers the ball to set up Yelencsics' game-winning goal.

Tutzauer had five goals and an assist for the Cavaliers. Murphy finished with five draw controls and four ground balls.

Cabrini outshot Marywood by a 43-32 margin but the Pacers had a 27-23 advantage in shots on goal. Cabrini had a 23-16 and 17-13 tilt in ground balls and draw controls, respectively

Marywood ends Cabrini's 58-game conference winning streak.

Marywood continues to face the heart of its Atlantic East schedule when it travels to Marymount University on Saturday. The Pacers and Saints have faced each other once in program history. Marymount ousted the Pacers from the 2017 ECAC Tournament with a 13-12 decision in Scranton.
