Marywood Ousts Saints to Claim First Place

Arlington, Va. – Marywood University took sole possession of first place in the Atlantic East Conference women's lacrosse standings with an 11-5 victory over Marymount University. Saturday's victory over the Saints gives the Pacers road wins over the top two teams in the Atlantic East preseason poll this week. It was their fourth straight victory.

Molly Yelencsics set a career-high with four goals in the victory. Freshman Brielle Peters had a multi-goal effort – twice finding the net for the Pacers.

Marywood (8-4, 3-0 Atlantic East) broke out of a low-scoring affair at halftime (3-2) with eight unanswered goals in the first 21 minutes of the second half.

Senior Mary Leahy provided her best performance of the season with 13 saves and a 72.2 save percentage. She held the Saints to just five goals allowed. Marymount managed just two goals in the first 51 minutes of play.

Faith Grieshaber finished with a goal and an assist. Zoe Simeone led the team with three caused turnovers to couple her three points.

Peters kicked off the action with the first goal of the game from an Ashley King feed less than 6:30 into regulation. Fifty-four seconds later, Marymount's Jessica Crew evened the score at the 22:36 mark.

Both teams went scoreless for the next 14 minutes until Yelencsics added the first of two straight goals at the 8:55 mark. Her second tally with 70 seconds remaining looked to send the Pacers into the break with a two-goal lead; however, Bridgett Stacom cut the Pacers' lead to 3-2 with six seconds left.

Maddy Langlotz stoked the Pacers 88 seconds into the second half, taking a Grieshaber delivery to the net. The Pacers' string of eight-straight second half goals continued with Peters' free-position shot at 24:16. Yelencsics capped the run with a goal at 8:51 to take an 11-2 lead.

The Saints added three goals in the final 8:07.

Stacom and Eliana Cassel had two goals for the Saints (9-5, 2-1 Atlantic East).

The Pacers won the ground ball game by a 16-13 margin. The Pacers went 18 for 20 (90%) on clear attempts, and the Marywood defense kept Marymount to 10 of 23 (43.4%). Marymount had a 10-8 edge in draw controls.

Marywood hosts Wesley College for Senior Day on Saturday, April 13. The Pacers welcome Susquehanna University the following day.
