Kean Topples Field Hockey

Union, N.J. - Host Kean University improved to 4-1 on the young season with a 5-1 win over visiting Marywood University Tuesday evening in non-conference field hockey.  The Pacers slipped to 2-3 with the loss.

Kean built a 3-0 halftime lead by out-shooting Marywood 12-0 in the opening two quarters of play.  Goals from Melissa Way (13:10) in the opening 15 minutes and from Jenna Patrone (19:20) and Morgan Stump (28:55) in the second gave the Cougars a three-goal halftime cushion.

A scoreless third quarter followed with Marywood getting their first shot off of the game and turning away seven Kean shots, but the Cougars out-scored Marywood 2-1 in the final quarter for the 5-1 final.  Down 5-0, Angie Genter ruined the host's shutout bid with an unassisted tally with 1:14 remaining in the game.

Overall, Kean out-shot Marywood 27-3 and had a 22-3 advantage in shots on goal.  The Cougars also had 16 penalty corners to one for the Pacers.  Kerri Mountz had a season-high 14 saves in the loss.

The Pacers return to the field Saturday when they travel to New York to take on Oswego State at 1:00 pm.
