Pacers Outlast Wildcats 3-2 Behind O'Brien's Breakout Performance

Marywood falls to Misericordia 3-0 in opener

Dallas, Pa. – Marywood University pulled off its second five-set victory in less than a week in a split at the Misericordia University tri-match Wednesday in women's volleyball. The Pacers defeated Penn College of Technology 3-2 after falling to Misericordia in the opener.

The Pacers defeated the Wildcats by scores of 24-26, 25-19, 25-14, 15-25, 15-10. Marywood lost to the host Cougars by sets of 25-21, 25-17, 25-15.

Marywood (3-5) recouped itself after a tough fourth set (15-25) to take the fifth by a 15-10 score.

Freshman Emily O'Brien enjoyed a breakout performance with 11 kills and a .273 attack percentage. She added three blocks (one solo-two assist) for 13 points. It marked the first kills of her career.

Peri Sheerin continued her climb towards 1,000 points with 10 kills. She added three aces for a team-best 13.5 points.

Building off of her success in the first match, Ashley King contributed nine kills with a .292 attack percentage and two block assists.

Defensively, Jordan Vossler garnered 33 digs. Brenna Kelley provided the Pacers with 10 digs.

Sam Compton scripted four service aces. Sara Burgos had a double-double with 34 assists and 13 digs.

The Wildcats' Coryn Oswald had spectacular outing with 21 kills and 15 digs. Hannah Burnett notched 43 digs.

In the first set, the Pacers broke open a 2-2 game with seven straight points off of Compton serves. A Pacers' four-point lead turned into a 23-21 Penn College advantage. O'Brien killed the Wildcats' momentum, and the Pacers evened the score at 23 apiece. Facing set point, O'Brien came through again with a kill from Burgos but Oswald secured the PCT win with two consecutive kills.

Marywood had little trouble dispelling the Wildcats in the second, thanks to an early rally that ended with a Sheerin ace to go ahead 7-1. Again, in the third set, the Pacers enjoyed a quick lead – this time off of back-to-back Vossler aces – that supplied them with a 7-3 advantage.

After a disheartening fourth set, the Pacers took an early 5-1 lead on a Sheerin ace. Penn College came right back to go ahead 6-5 on two Burnett aces. O'Brien reclaimed the lead (8-7) on a kill from King, and Compton helped the cause with an ace. Sheerin registered match point on a kill from Burgos.

The Pacers shot .154 from the field. Marywood had a 14-8 advantage in aces and a 6-1 favor in blocks.

Misericordia 3, Marywood 0

Misericordia had a .448 attack percentage with just eight errors to derail the Pacers.

King had a team-best seven kills with just one error for a .667 attack percentage. Compton matched her with eight points with two aces.

Burgos tallied 18 assists, and Vossler sport nine digs.

The Pacers remain in Luzerne County to take on King's College Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Scanlon Gymnasium.
