Pacers Rally for Three Straight Goals for First Victory

Jon Dinnell scores game-winning goal in the 85th minute

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University stormed back from a two-goal deficit with three goals in the final 18 minutes of regulation to secure its first men's soccer victory of the season. The Pacers defeated Rutgers-Newark 4-3 on Monday night.

Jon Dinnell tallied the game-winning goal in the 85th minute. Dinnell scored his first goal since the 2017 season when he converted a 21-yard shot on a ball served on an Aram Aghababian direct kick.

Trailing 3-1 in the final two-thirds of the game, freshman Christopher Valdes ignited the Pacers' offense with a goal in the 73rd minute. Just in front of the goal line, Valdes tapped in a Dinnell-assisted direct kirk from the midfield.

Just 63 seconds later, Carlos Perez converted a penalty kick in the 74th minute for the equalizer.

Perez finished with a pair of goals. Dinnell had a goal and an assist.

Marywood (1-5) recuperated after allowing three Scarlet Raider goals in an eight-minute span. At a 1-0 deficit, Adonis Scotland beat two defenders on a Juwan Ash-fed ball from the midfield in the 55th minute. Franco Catania gave Rutgers-Newark (3-4) an edge in the 62nd minute. Joe Alba gave the visitors what seemed to be an insurance goal in the 64th minute.

Perez supplied the Pacers with a lead in the 28th minute. The senior captain converted a Zac Lloyd cross from the right perimeter.

Marywood outshot Rutgers-Newark 14-11, and both teams had seven attempts on target. Rutgers-Newark had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Pacers continue their six-game homestand Wednesday against Hartwick College.
